The House narrowly approved a vital spending bill Thursday night despite deep misgivings among liberals and conservatives alike, sending the measure to the Senate as a funding deadline looms.
The bill passed on a 219-206 vote, following an intense lobbying effort by House Republican leaders and the White House.
Current government funding technically runs out at midnight Thursday, and lawmakers still are expected to move a stopgap measure to buy time as the Senate considers the main $1.1 trillion spending package. That debate could last through the weekend and potentially into Monday.
Passage in the House followed hours of urgent appeals from an unlikely alliance: President Obama and House GOP leadership.
Obama and Vice President Biden worked the phones to sway Democratic lawmakers. White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough also met on the Hill with the Democratic caucus. Despite sources inside the meeting initially saying he did little to persuade lawmakers, a rift emerged in the Democratic leadership late Thursday. As House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi continued to oppose the bill, her deputy, Rep. Steny Hoyer, D-Md., urged passage.
Meanwhile, House GOP leaders did what they could to sway conservative members who, for different reasons, were opposed to the package.
In the end, 67 Republicans defected, but 57 Democrats voted for it.

I believe the only hope is a third party and ask the rinos if they want to join US instead of the other way around. It will bring the cock roaches out into the light. Then we’ll know who to vote out.
I truly believe a real conservative party would wipe out the republicans in one election. Trying to take them out by primary didn’t work out too well.
When Mark Levine has Jeff Sessions on and Mark sucks up to him, it makes me want to puke.
None taken.
For the idea of “America” in the sense you and I grew up in it, no. There is no going forward. But people need to understand and accept what got them where they are now to survive the mess yet to come. Empires come and go. Republics are thrown away. But people survive both. And unless they immediately want to return to the madness after the SHTF world burns itself out, they better understand why.
Barring global thermonuclear war, eventually this all shakes out. Which way it shakes is up to us individually. We can continue on the path of stupid and live as serfs in whatever forms from the ashes or not.
There’s a rather clever trick to debate, or the public forum for debate. At least that is my take on this.
Even if you are winning, you trash the other guy as being too intransigent, unwilling to compromise. In this manner you always have the other guy off balance, appearing to be unwilling to share power.
Laugh if you will, but this has worked so well for the Democrats that the Republicans are virtually the same as them, and yet there persists this public perception that the Republicans are vile and don’t get it.
Well, in truth, they don’t get it. They are owned by the Left.
It’s actually painful to watch the Democrats play the Republicans like a fiddle.
You almost feel sorry for them. Then again, they aren’t uneducated fools. No, they’re just fools.
They aren’t being played. Dems and GOP are the same people. You can’t be played when there’s only one team.
We WANT to believe there are 2 parties. I want to believe time machines exist too. Neither is the case. There is no evidence, based on the actions of the GOP that it is not merely a name given as a pressure relief tactic to give voters the illusion of choice.
Look back since Reagan. How often is the GOP pushing for some version of what Dems want? A lot. That’s incrementalism from step one.
How often are they running progressively more ‘Democrat” candidates?
What exactly HAVE they done conservative in nearly 30 years?
Nothing the Dems didn’t overturn with no fight at all.
That was a great post, Norm. the biting sarcasm will be lost on most, but that’s a keeper.
“When Mark Levine has Jeff Sessions on and Mark sucks up to him, it makes me want to puke.”
One hand washes the other, FRiend. If they weren’t on the same script, do you really think they would be on the same forum?
The worst part is that it was off the top of my head. The mere fact that this drivel was posted so ridiculously often here that it can be pulled off the top of my or anyone elses’ head is pretty damning commentary about where the true loyalties of many lie. And it ain’t with conservative beliefs.
Whats worse is that a lot of people don’t see it as a problem to begin with. And then they wonder how we got here. Sounds a lot like the post turtle.
“Sermon still needs to be made. Not to you, no, but there are still plenty that doggedly refuse to accept the reality and it only hinders us going ahead.”
You can’t fix stupid.
In my view, most of the problems we face aren’t going to be fixed by partisan politics anyway. So I’m spending less and less time even commenting on it. I have limited time on this planet, and I’d rather spend my time on stuff that works.
Freedom really does boil down to making the personal choice to be free.
Very true. And you are right. Stupid can’t be fixed. I look at it more as working at keeping those that aren’t stupid from falling into the trap set BY the stupid.
I don’t even want the stupid fixed. I’m hoping natural law kicks in soon and stupid is a problem that solves itself. In time it always does. The last thing the survivors of this mess will need is the stupid spreading more of it while people are trying to rebuild. Because you just know that after the collapse someone will be screaming for Rick Perry and his cowboy boots or Mitt Romney and his business acumen to help restructure Barry’s post American Landscape.
what about Benishek from MI - tea party put him twice. If so he has lost his TEA Party support.
So about one-third of the Republicans refused to follow Boehner's lead and vote for his budget? There may be hope for change yet.
...following an intense lobbying effort by House Republican leaders and the White House..
This should tell everyone on FR what they need to know about the Republicans in the House.
No further discussion required.
The wicked witch of the west is a loser........ she was smacked down. She attempted a power play that failed
That was a vote of no confidence by enough to dethrone the harriden crone
With Faux beating the drum for them. Should tell you a lot about THEM, too...
What does Senator Sessions have to do with the votes yesterday?
Wasn't lost on me. But I'd quibble with you on when the event horizon got passed. IMIO, it was 6/28/12, when one intimidated SCOTUS judge proclaimed that ObolaCare passed Constitutional muster.
THAT was the day we went over the precipice.
