ANNAPOLIS, Md. Frank Walsh still pays dues to the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, but more than four years have passed since his name was called at the union hall where the few available jobs are distributed. Mr. Walsh, his wife and two children live on her part-time income and a small inheritance from his mother, which is running out.
Sitting in the food court at a mall near his Maryland home, he sees some of the restaurants are hiring. He says he cant wait much longer to find a job. But hes not ready yet.
Id work for them but theyre only willing to pay $10 an hour, he said, pointing at a Chick-fil-A that probably pays most of its workers less than that. Im 49 with two kids $10 just isnt going to cut it.
Working, in America, is in decline. The share of prime-age men those 25 to 54 years old who are not working has more than tripled since the late 1960s, to 16 percent. More recently, since the turn of the century, the share of women without paying jobs has been rising, too. The United States, which had one of the highest employment rates among developed nations as recently as 2000, has fallen toward the bottom of the list....

Terry Malloy at the NYC docks??
Journeyman Electricians used to making $60-$70K/year were making 1/3 of that because business was not spending money on capital expansion/improvement, etc.
Ha, ha. The pres__ent is giving your job to an "undocumented" worker...
I was NOT a Union Guy either.
Good luck getting the fast food job.
You will be seen as over qualified.
Bs, they would not hire you unless you speak Spanish now.
$10 hr vs $0 hr
Hmmmmm... what to do.
Some truth in that.
Unions kill jobs. Same with the minimum wage.
Its not worth working hard for so little pay.
After you do the math, living on federal and state benefits that pay just as much is easier, given that there’s no sign things will get better.
The decimation of the middle class has not improved the economy or brightened Americans’ faith in the future of the country.
If I thought he’d really work I’d recruit him tomorrow, but that union mindset becomes ingrained after a while. I was once in AFSCME, so that’s not second-hand knowledge talking.
um... stupid and criminal is not exactly a recipe for success.
this man might want to consider moving to a right to work state where he can start his own electrical business and be his own boss and make good money again. But instead he just sits year after year in the union hall waiting for his number to be called.
wow... unbelievable.
Whitey must pay.
Let me see if I get this straight.
This guy has not any work from the IBEW hall, but he continues to give money to an organization that constantly supports anti-energy pro immigration politicians.
A guy this dumb should not be allowed around electricity.
BTW I wonder how many times he was sent back to the Hall early. Just say’n
My late mother would have had a good way to describe Mr. Walsh.
Lazy good-for-nothing.
.
Latinos only want their own kind working with them, they have issues with especially blacks who are violent with them and owners need Spanish speakers to serve their market, so old time Americans are screwed.
No sympathy from me. The IBEW supported Obama and Obama supports the illegal aliens who are taking the jobs that used to go to the IBEW. Too bad.
