Maybe they said “Drop your weapon” and he went to get it so he could drop it.
Maybe they said “Hands up” or “Don’t move”, and him being a 12 year old boy, not thinking things through, thought, “Aw, c’mon, it’s just a toy, I’ll show you.”
There’s video. No audio. You can watch the video. They zoom right up to him, jump out, he puts his hands to his waistband, they shoot.
Startling a possibly armed person is probably not the best way to deal with that person, in most circumstances. They didn’t give him time or space to react sensibly; they didn’t give themselves a safety margin.
And there are some people who will forgive them anything - which is exactly why they feel free to do anything.
This country is based on the idea of civilian control - not military. Cops are becoming militarized and claiming absolute power of instant execution. That is not America, and supporting is is not American. Soldiers put their lives in harm's way in order to protect the rights of Americans. Police kill Americans if they feel endangered and have as their SOLE object being going home safe at night. They are NOT the same.
So when the police become militarized, they are not the military, don't behave as the military, have not committed to the risks and sacrifices of the military and have absolutely NO intention of any military level of bravery. Treating them, therefore, as the military is WRONG. They are ARMED BUREAUCRATS. And they will be the first to invoke any and every bureaucratic reason NOT to get involved in helping anyone. It's a job they intend surviving to get their pension, no matter who they have to kill to do it - THAT'S IT.
But - fine. Okay, they're armed bureaucrats. But what police work USED to be is getting backup, and using negotiators, and keeping things calm. These days that's out the window. It's confront, exacerbate, intensify the situation, wait until someone breaks and then unload on them - and not once or twice to stop the threat, but redefining threat as life itself, and emptying magazines completely as a matter of policy. Or using SWAT teams for, of all things, warrants, and even administrative warrants with zero expectation of any threats. It's gotten completely nuts out there. And it unneccessarily endangers cops.
Of course (and thank God), most cops do NOT go looking to hurt people, and a many are actually, genuinely service-oriented towards their communities and take a lot of sh*t while doing so. Neertheless, they are ALL bound to an ABSOLUTE Code of Silence that is MEANT to subvert the law and protect the guilty. And there ARE bad cops, and as a result they do NOT get punished - EVER, NEVER, EVER. No way, Jose. NotGonnaHappen.
And if that's not enough, their Rules of Engagement against Americans are FAR more easily and immediately lethal than the ROEs of our own troops against our country's enemies in time of war. And that is a crime in itself.
It's a real problem, and one that the Democrats are literally bragging about exploiting while crying crocodile tears for the dead thugs who SHOULD have been shot, while excusing ACTUAL police brutality cases when they arise, thereby totally confusing rightful and wrongful shootings. That's why we need independant civilian review of police shootings, and deny internal reviews as final authorities. Otherwise this problems is just going to keep getting worse, right up to catastrophe. Because the goal of the Rats is not a crazy police force - it's to use them to incite riots and ultimately martial law, as you can see from the media exploitation of Ferguson.
WAKE UP.
No vapors.
this cop made no attempt to sort out what was happening. Stupid.
That was a mounted assault. Nothing else. Used to practice that in the Army. Great for preparing to defend the Fulda Gap. Not so great for playgrounds.
My brothers played with cap guns, real gunpowder that goes bang.
No cop ever came screeching up to us, but if one had, we wouldn’t have reacted sensibly - you literally cannot think when something like that happens - either you freeze or you move on impulse.
It was a different time and place but people’s reactions to being rushed and yelled at don’t change.
You may think I’m just yanking your chain with that comment about officers not rolling. Believe me, there are folks here who don’t think there should be law enforcement officers.
I think you’re mistaken when it comes to inner city kids and 12, 13, and 14 years of age kids. Has it happened? Some of these kids are like feral cats. I can’t point to any cases on the spur of the moment, but I’m inclined to think it has happened and more than we suspect.
As for someone calling in a report about a person with a guy, an officer has to take that seriously. If a kid is walking on the street with something in his waist-band and goes for it, I’m inclined to think an officer would take that as a serious threat.
If you’re outside a restaurant and a group of three boys approach you with something in their wait-band that looks like a weapon and they look you in the eyes and pull it out towards you, what are you going to think?
Your wife and kids are right there.
I’m thinking this could get real dicey.
No, because that cop would have observed you through the window without you knowing they were there. It would have been obvious. If however you had come bursting through the door with that little device pointed at the officer, you may have been in serious trouble.
Yeah, a lot of things sound like that to you.
Somehow I’ll survive.
the point is the officer took the time to observe. It was a big building and he went to quite a bit of trouble to find us.
He didn’t just drive his car through the front door and start shooting like our hero in this video.
you are a moron
Well, if you wish to play games with police officers simply because they’re union members, go for it. I won’t be joining you.
Look, I despise unions. I don’t think the police, health care workers, or teachers should be able to be a part of a union.
That doesn’t mean that there can’t be good officers on the streets simply because they happen to be a union member.
Are they going to have solid political principles? I doubt it.
Did you mean a blood-thirsty statist?
I want to get my insults correct.
I would suspect that there are people alive these officers hadn’t had to go this route with too.
One incident doesn’t mean their whole career was identical to this incident.
I’m glad you didn’t have to go this route during your career. Good for you.
I don’t know why they pulled that close to the kid. I don’t know if there was extenuating circumstances we aren’t aware of. Some folk have mentioned it, and I don’t think they are totally off base by any means. I still think the kid made some sort of mistake that cost him.
I’m not sure if these officers went before a grand jury, or if this is just recent. I would be interested to see what the review determined.
I watched the video. Thank you.

There are times when I appreciate insults. Thank you.
You don’t know how much better I feel.
Hmmm, I didn’t notice them driving through a front window. Perhaps you could provide that link.
I have to go now. Sorry, I’ve got two other things working.
Later...
You trying to be funny or what.
Responses like that make me think you don’t want to have a real conversation about what happened.
They are not my heros. To be honest, I’m not enamored with them nearly as much as you think. Their jobs aren’t easy. It’s the pits type of work. I try to think what goes through their mind in these situations, and I’m just not as quick to condemn as other are.
DariusBane, it was your comment. Don’t blame me for playing off it. I could have said the same thing to you, you just said to me. I didn’t. I just kidded you.
