Saturday's Louisiana runoff election closed the book on the 2014 election cycle (with one small exception noted below); as the dust settles, the GOP achieved a net gain of nine Senate seats, and will command a healthy 54-46 majority in the upper chamber come January. Republicans controlled just 40 Senate seats as recently as early 2010. A few notes on Bill Cassidy's lopsided defeat of Sen. Mary Landrieu, as well as the larger national picture, starting with a look at Cassidy's 56/44 victory margin:

Better comparison, perhaps: At left is Landrieu's last runoff win in 2002, by 3 points. At right is tonight's result pic.twitter.com/2JAv1ospLJ— David Freddoso (@freddoso) December 7, 2014
Since '80, GOP hasn't knocked off more than 2 Sen Dem incumbents in any election cycle. Beat 5 this year. #LASen #NCSen #COSen #AKSen #ARSen— Guy Benson (@guypbenson) December 7, 2014
On Dec. 24, 2009, the Democratic-controlled Senate passed President Obamas healthcare law with a filibuster-proof 60-vote majority, triggering a massive backlash that propelled Republicans to control of the House the following year. On the Senate side, going into this year's midterm elections, 25 senators who voted for Obamacare were already out or not going be part of the new Senate being sworn in next month. After Democratic losses on Nov. 4 and Saturday's defeat of Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., the number has risen to 30. In other words, half of the Senators who voted for Obamacare will not be part of the new Senate. To be sure, it isnt fair to attribute all of the turnover in the chamber to Obamacare...That having been said, many senators who voted for Obamacare lost re-election battles in which they were hit hard for their support for the law and other Democrats were forced to retire because they had no hope of getting re-elected given their support for the law. A total of 16 Senators who voted for Obamacare either failed to win reelection or declined to run for reelection and had their seats turned over to Republicans.

So we would need 12 'rats voting with the pubs to over-ride odumbo's vetoes, seems impossible..at least we have both Houses, one thing at a time..
Jed Babbin has a great piece in the Spectator today. The GOP has already pissed away the majority.
And they behave like they lost 9 seats.
They don't, and they did.
Well...well. Now let’s see if the Repubs know how to wield their power. If they don’t...they will become the Whigs of the 21st century. No “power sharing” and no “reaching across the aisle to our friends”. The last two elections say that the American people are fed-up with the commie asshats in government. Don’t mis-read the message, Repubs.
Doesn’t matter. They are complicit with Obama & the Democrats on most issues. They won’t use the power of the purse to cut off funding for obamacare or amnesty. They are about to fund all of Obama’s illegal actions 100% before they even take over next year.
Pathetically tragic but sadly true.
Yes, let’s attack the Republican’s while the Democrats still control the Senate for not doing what they can do after they have the actual majority in January.
That's disingenuous.
Let’s hope the party of ‘NO’ (to Marxism) remains the party of ‘NO’ (to Marxism).
Doesn’t matter at all.
Waste of time.
Mary hasn’t been applying Mooschelles school lunch diet. No wonder the Bamster kept his distance— and Ma Mooch too.
You are a little late to what McConnell said he would do even BEFORE the election:
Look, we suffered a coup - and the GOP Ruling Class LIKES this Imperial Fascist Oligarchy being established over us.
If McConnell and Boehner fold to everything the Dems/Obama do, their majority hold may be short lived.
In 2016, the Pubbies will be defending 24 Senate seats, while the Dems defend 10 Senate seats. Half of those Pubbies are of the ‘moderate’ variety who have more friends across the aisle than on their side of the aisle.
Blah blah blah. Your negativity is disgusting
...and will still lose on most issues.
You know if Obama really wanted to play hardball he’d have ol dumbass Joe decide to come in and run that place the next two years. The VP is President of the Senate.
If the rinos and gop-e go along, what we have is the ability to control the docket. And basically block legislation/discussion we don’t want, and put up votes on what we do want, and can pass.
Your support of obvious enemies of America is disgutsing.
In fact, I’m not really seeing a whole lot of rah, rah ,rah go GOP in any of the comments to your thread.
You must be pretty damn disgusted.
