Not true at all. If she had resigned, Jindal’s naming Cassidy would have been effective only to the end of the current term. They still would have been required to hold the run off election for the NEXT term beginning in January.

I don’t think a celebration thread is the time, or the place.

My understanding is Cassidy would have served for two years and then he would have to run again for the seat.

For over a thousand years Roman conquerors returning from the wars enjoyed the honor of triumph, a tumultuous parade. In the procession came trumpeteers, musicians and strange animals from conquered territories, together with carts laden with treasure and captured armaments. The conquerors rode in a triumphal chariot, the dazed prisoners walking in chains before him. Sometimes his children robed in white stood with him in the chariot or rode the trace horses. A slave stood behind the conqueror holding a golden crown and whispering in his ear a warning: that all glory is fleeting.― George S. Patton Jr.

The election has to be held regardless. A concession holds no legal ramifications at all. It is a courtesy to the winner and that is all. Some losers concede and some don't, but it does not affect the outcome of the race. Some have conceded and then ended up winning when all votes were counted - they still won the election.
Can you imagine the chaos if elections were not required if the other candidate "conceded" before the election. It will lend the other side the ability to apply pressure tactics until they "conceded".

Again, a governor's appointment for a vacant seat is valid for only the current term. After that state laws vary. Some appointments are valid for the remainder of the term - some are valid until the governor sets a date for a special election, and some are valid until the next regularly scheduled election.
There is no provision to appoint a senator to a future term. Can you imagine if a governor could appoint someone before an election is even held?

I lived there. It DID happen exactly the way you described. Yes, it was ugly. The white candidate who finished first conceded because the campaign was getting so ugly. The runoff was cancelled.
I recall Vermont has (maybe had) a requirement that the governor get a majority vote, with the legislature deciding among the top two finishers if no one had a majority.
A few years ago the top candidate finished with slightly less than majority but the #2 finisher waived his right to a runoff in the legislature.

I dont think a celebration thread is the time, or the place.I haven't posted on the "celebration thread" only on this live thread on the election: "LA ELECTIONS RESULT - POLLS CLOSE AT 8:00 PM CST (LIVE THREAD.)
Maybe you are on the wrong thread, the celebration thread is posted just below:

The 18-year long reign of Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA) has finally come to an end in Louisiana. In a landslide victory in Saturdays runoff election, Republican Bill Cassidy defeated the incumbent and captured the ninth Senate seat for the GOP, capping off a victorious midterm election for his party. The road was rocky for Landrieu from the start. The public found out about her improper use of taxpayer funds, then the fact she doesnt even own a home in Louisiana. Then, she dissed her constituents. Because of all her missteps and Cassidys growing lead, Democrats quickly gave up on Landrieu...
As everyone is celebrating, the GOPe and the dems are working hard to continue to destroy our Constitutional Republic.
Patton was right, all glory is fleeting. Always be ready.

Withdrawing before election day is different from conceding while votes are being counted.

Oh, Orleans wont tip the race. The question right now is basically whether the margin is above or below her jungle primary showing of 42.1%. Shell probably improve on that by a point or two after Orleans fully dumps. (Theyre at 40% right now.) She finally lost with 44.06% New Orleans fraud was not enough to put her over the top, which the Dem leadership realized weeks ago.
I'm wondering to what extent Obama's "heartburn" was enhanced by this rout.
