YOUR HIT PARADE, 1941The draft had been reinstated in 1940 to great popular objection, and a lot of people were in uniform even before the Day That Would Live in Infamy. So as a nation went to war, what was the Greatest Generation listening to on the NBC Blue network and dancing to at the Avalon Ballroom? Tonight and tomorrow night, Luvie Sue and I will bring back memories of the Swing Era in American popular music. The music may sound strange to ears accustomed to rock and roll, Hot Country and hip-hop, but this was an era of musical artistry in jazz and the popular idiom. The Greatest Generation may no longer be dancing to these numbers, but they havent forgotten them.
#25 Gene Krupa with Irene Daye: Therell Be Some Changes MadeEugene Bertram Krupa (1909-73) was born in Chicago to Polish parents who were strict Catholics and had groomed Gene for the priesthood. He was a product of the Catholic school system, but decided the priesthood was not for him. He began playing drums professionally in the Twenties with bands in Wisconsin. He broke into the Chicago scene in 1927, when he was picked to become a member of Thelma Terry and her Playboys, the first notable American jazz band to be led by a woman.
He made his first recordings in 1927 with a band under the leadership of Eddie Condon and Red McKenzie. Along with recordings by musicians such as the legendary Bix Beiderbecke, these sides are examples of Chicago Style jazz. The McKenzie-Condon sides are notable for being early examples of the use of a full drum kit on recordings. In Chicago, one drummer to influence Gene in this period was Baby Dodds, whose use of press rolls was reflected in Gene's playing.
In 1934 he joined Benny Goodman's band, where his featured drum work made him a national celebrity. Check out the recording of Goodmans 1938 Carnegie Hall concert for some of the most amazing drumming ever put on shellac. As Gene went out on the Carnegie stage with the band, he said to his fellow musicians something that reflected his religious upbringing: I feel like a whore in church. In 1941, he went out on his own.
