Chris Rock explained in a lengthy interview Sunday that he believes part of healing racial relations in America is by white people “owning” the actions of their ancestors.
The black comedian told New York magazine’s Frank Rich that racial progress in America is “nonsense” and that the only thing that’s changed is white people aren’t as crazy as they used to be.

Nobody wants to be held responsible for things that other people of the same race might do or might have done, but you'll find people wishing or demanding that other people be held responsible for what people of their race do or have done.
Basically, Chris Rock got his name in the paper, and got hundreds of people to comment about what he said. In the publicity world, that's a victory. There's not much more to it than that.

Does Chris Rock want to own the actions of his ancestors? Of course not. We should allow those issues to remain in written history.

I had an English friend once, very nice chap, well-to-do, a product of an expensive private education and a typical hand-wringing, apologetic liberal. One day we were having a chat and he asked me did I not think that after all the wealth and comfort we enjoyed today was based on the terrible crimes of slavery and imperialism and would it not be too much to ask for us to pay some form of retribution.
I said to him that given that my ancestors spent most of the 19th century half-starved living on a diet of rotten potatoes on a wind and rain-swept hillside in Donegal I felt no obligation to compensate anyone, however if he had any skeletons in his family’s closet that he felt the need to atone for then feel free to hand over whatever sum of his own cash he felt like but he better keep his hands off my stash.
He didn’t pursue the line of argument with me again.
My ancestors never owned a single slave nor did they have anything to do with Jim Crow racism.

Odd that they left 15 years before the war started then, especially given that the draft never applied in Ireland, yes that’s right every Irishman who fought for the British since the Act of Union, and there were hundreds of thousands of them, were all volunteers who freely signed up to serve Her/His Britannic Majesty.
The British had to conscript English, Scottish and Welsh soldiers but the Irish were all volunteers, funny that isn’t it?
Even imperialism brought some progress to the good. They’re complaining based on the comparison of some imaginary and probably unattainable outcome to what took place.

Start with the original slavers - Africans

Both blacks and whites were traders! The whites didn’t dare go inland off the African coast - they bought the slaves from AFRICAN Chiefs who brought them to the coast and sold them.
The slave trade ended ONLY after many years of WHITES fighting both sides of the slave traders to end it.
So, Crissy - and the rest of you - own up to the BLACK side of Slavery.

Chris, less than 10% of the population of the South owned or even traded slaves. So, genius, that means that at least 90% had zilch to do with the slave trade.
