Nine years ago Eaker & I were talking about what a wonderful person TexasCowboy was and what poopheads his children were. We both agreed that it would be a damn shame to let the memory of him lapse. Three or four times a year TexasCowboy would host shoots at various ranges across Texas. After everyone was finished shooting, he would then serve up a yummy lunch. It was while Eaker & I were talking that I came up with the (rare brilliant) idea of continuing what he started, but to do this in his memory. This is how the TexasCowboy Memorial Shoot was born.
2015 will mark the 10th Annual Memorial Shoot! I could not be more proud of how this event has blossomed throughout the years. The following phrase has been spoken at every shoot, except the first one, “This is the best shoot we’ve had!”.
Get ready to speak those words again . . .
The 10th Annual TexasCowboy Memorial Shoot will be held June 6th, 2015 at Schwenke’s Rifle Range in Aransas Pass. This is a private range, but I was once again able to sweet talk Mr. Schwenke to let us use his range (OK – maybe it wasn’t so much the sweet talk as it was he saw how much extra money he could make for the day). The cost is $15.00/adult. We have the 25 yard range reserved for us, but will be allowed to use the other ranges ~ as long as we “blend in” and are respectful to the members. The shoot will start at 10:00 am. I’ll have waivers for everyone to sign, and will collect your fee with the waivers to turn in all at one time. This year we will not meet as a group for breakfast before heading to the range.
If cpdiii is able to make it to the shoot he will provide lunch, otherwise we will have BBQ catered in (which will cost about $8.00/person ~ haven’t priced that yet).
I have reserved a block of 15 cottages at Pelican Bay Resorts ~ http://www.pelicanbayresort.com/ ~ for June 4th – 6th. To reserve a cottage call (Toll Free) 866-729-7177 or 361-729-7177, let them know you are with the TexasCowboy Memorial Shoot group. Our group will receive a discount on the price quoted on their website. The club house rents for $150.00 for four hours, I reserved Friday and Saturday nights ~ I can’t remember the start times, but we have to be out of there by 10:00 pm both nights. The lady I spoke with said we could probably use the club house for free, depending on how many cottages we actually rent.
For those arriving Thursday night dinner will be at Captain Benny’s ~ this is subject to change. The Friday night dinner is yet to be determined. Saturday night will be easy stuff ~ appetizers and chips & dip type stuff. There are a few months yet to figure all that out.
Everyone get your vacation requests in early. Really look forward to seeing everyone in June!

It’s not looking good for the family Windflier to make it to this year’s shoot.
Libertybel and I have crunched the numbers and the trip is going to cost more than what we can reasonably afford. We’d have to see a pretty big windfall from somewhere for us to do this without jeopardizing our basic finances.
I know that sucks, but we’ve got to live within our means. So sorry to everyone who was looking forward to our attending.
Well, I think I can speak for everyone when I say you will be SO missed at the shoot! It was an honor to meet you and Libertybel and your wonderful son, but know how it is with budgets and all that darn stuff that gets in the way of the important stuff.
I hope something turns up to make it possible for you to make it after all, doggone it!
Well, we're on a solid track to have a better year than last, but the Shoot will come too early in the year for us to see that income. If the gathering was in the Fall, like it was last year, we probably could have managed it.
Summer is our batzhit crazy time of year for business, so we'll be up to our eyeballs in work. The Shoot happens in June, so we'd be spending money we haven't really earned yet, plus we'd be closing the shop for about a week - losing that income. That's a double hit to our finances at a time we can least afford it.
We'll have to content ourselves with smaller gatherings at the Seagoville range outside of Dallas. We can do those on weekends over the summer.
You will be missed at the next shoot. You and the Windflier family, are one of the good guys. Actually all the TC shoot people are good guys, even humble gunner, but you make damn good whisky and that will be most certainly missed.
I was quite amazed that your whisky was so smooth and only aged a short time. I refuse to drink bad whisky. Yours is good.
I was privileged to meet you and family at the last shoot. I hope things change so you can make the next one, but if you can not it is understood.
I was very impressed with your children in the way they performed when shooting. They had good control and understood the proper use of firearms in a safe manner. They are a credit to you and Mrs. Windflier. When I spoke with them it was yes sir and no sir. You “done good!”
Maybe I can make it to one of the smaller gatherings sometime this year. Maybe.....

I'm so sorry we can't make it. I would have loved to meet you and your husband this time around. Freeper folks are some of the best people I've ever met. And this Shoot is going to be one of the best ones ever. You are going to have such a good time.

I thought I replied to this last night ~ I guess being in an area with limited service worked against me.
The jest of what I said is, we will truly miss seeing you, The Mrs. and your wonderful children.
I understand why y’all can’t make it and have mega respect that you won’t let your customers down or go into debt to attend this function.
I’ll say a minor prayer that y’all win the lottery (don’t forget to buy a ticket ~ as that helps the minor prayer!).
Maybe sometime in the Fall, Eaker & I can make our way up north for a mini-get together.
Thanks Donna. I appreciate you understanding our situation. We’ll have to enjoy the tenth anniversary shoot via FR, but once the weather gets nice, any and all are welcome to spend a day hanging out at the Seagoville Range in North Texas with us.
By next year, we’ll have deeper pockets, and can probably afford to travel across the state to party with everyone.

I suppose our child rearing style is just in our genes. We were both raised in pretty ship-shape households, and I guess we just absorbed a lot of those old fashioned ways. We honestly don't even work at it that hard.
It probably helps that our kids have never been put under the usual sort of peer pressure, due to being home schooled. We also run a family business, and our two eldest boys put their tool belts on and work with me every day. Might also have something to do with it. Our life sorta runs on the old family farm model.
Anywho....thanks for the accolades on the brew. I happen to know of another rapscallion down that way who just might bring some to the Shoot :-)
