Columbia County, Ark. Theres no sign of it here in Magnolia, Ark., but the boycott season is upon us, and graduates of Princeton and Bryn Mawr are demanding justice from Wal-Mart, which is not in the justice business but in the groceries, clothes, and car-batteries business. It is easy to scoff, but I am ready to start taking the social-justice warriors insipid rhetoric seriously as soon as two things happen: First, I want to hear from the Wal-Mart-protesting riffraff a definition of justice that is something that does not boil down to I Get What I Want, Irrespective of Other Concerns.
Second, I want to turn on the radio and hear Jay-Z boasting about his new Timex.
It is remarkable that Wal-Mart, a company that makes a modest profit margin (typically between 3 percent and 3.5 percent) selling ordinary people ordinary goods at low prices, is the great hate totem for the well-heeled Left, whose best-known celebrity spokesclowns would not be caught so much as downwind from a Supercenter, while at the same time, nobody is out with placards and illiterate slogans and generally risible moral posturing in front of boutiques dealing in Rolex, Prada, Hermès, et al. Its almost as if there is a motive at work here other than that which is stated by our big-box-bashing friends on the left and their A-list human bullhorns.
What might that be?

Or Target. Or K-Mart and Best Buy, while they last.
No, it's all about “Look At ME!!”.
I remember when the faux fashionistas in my family would never shop at Filene’s Basement, until us poor folk started wearing the same brands.
I wonder if this guy got some money to write this free advertisement for Walmart?
“.....The Rolex tribe, and those who aspire to be aligned with it, signal their status by sneering at the Timex tribe or by condescending to it as they purport to act on its behalf, as though poor people were too stupid to know where to find the best deal on a can of beans. Or call it the Trader Joes tribe vs. the Wal-Mart tribe, the Prius tribe vs. the F-150 tribe.
We see this everywhere: In Ferguson, self-righteous and self-appointed spokesmen for the marginalized point to the fact that the criminal-justice system generally produces far worse outcomes to the poor and the non-white than it does to the well-off and white. This is, generally speaking, true. And though the dynamics are equally complicated, the same thing is true of the government schools, which do a pretty good job for rich white kids in the suburbs while functioning as day prisons and incubators of dysfunction for poor minority kids, especially in big cities. But the social-justice warriors in Ferguson will fight on bloody stumps to prevent reform of the government-school cartels, the endless failures of which do far more to harm the lives of the economically and socially vulnerable than any police department does. Why? The teachers are part of the tribe, and the cops are part of a rival tribe, which is why nobody ever bought a Rolex out of the royalties of a song titled F**k the Milwaukee Public Schools..............”
Kevin Williamson is a damn good writer.
Great line there at the end.
Arguments against WN's "obscene profits" are not based on their margin, but on the total $, which is indeed a large number.
Meanwhile, the admirable Apple has a margin above 20%.
I see Bryn Mawr and I think Ira Einhorn University.
I am not opposed to shopping at Wal-Mart as not only do they offer low prices, ability to buy bulk (if someone can fill a car up once a month- it costs less in gas than stopping by somewhere once a week), they also hire A LOT of people, many of whom have very little job skills. They have training videos and incentive programs(I’ve seen documented a few times). Some people need to demonstrate that they can show up at every shift on time and be willing to work. Twice I have read from writers who went to work for Wal-Mart and found that it wasn’t Wal-Mart that kept the workers down, but the workers own personal choices and attitudes.
Liberal elites get off on ‘disparity of income’ between themselves and Walmart shoppers. Basically, liberals are bullies...
Walmart hires greeters at its stores to give its customers a warm welcome. Yet today Walmart customers are being greeted by angry protestors and union thugs, ruining their shopping experiences.
When will the executives at Walmart realize that they’re not living in the 1960s anymore? The future belongs to retailers who can improve their internet shopping operations and/or move their headquarters and expand their stores outside of high-taxing, heavily unionized countries like the U.S.
As Walmart’s founder Sam Walton once said, “If some community, for whatever reason, doesn’t want us in there, we aren’t interested in going in and creating a fuss.” Yet what else does Walmart do but create a major not-in-my-backyard fuss by liberal protestors every time it tries to build a store in an American community?
I own WM stock, mate. Most of my portfolio are from companies libtards hate.
I wish the media could somehow be forced to cover the actual issues, and discuss the actual facts. But in every case, they only repeat the propaganda of the left. A piece like this will never see the light of day in the media. None of the ideas discussed in this piece will ever be debated in the media. The media is a Goebbels Propaganda Machine for the Left.
P.J. ORourke has the arrogant, irresponsible leftists figured out:
“The principle feature of American liberalism is sanctimoniousness.
By loudly denouncing all bad things — war and hunger and date rape — liberals testify to their own terrific goodness. More important, they
promote themselves to membership in a self-selecting elite of those who care deeply about such things. It’s a kind of natural aristocracy, and
the wonderful thing about this aristocracy is that you don’t have to be brave, smart, strong or even lucky to join it, you just have to be liberal.”
The second item in the liberal creed, after self-righteousness, is unaccountability.
Liberals have invented whole college majors - psychology, sociology, women’s studies - to prove that nothing is anybody’s fault. No one is fond
of taking responsibility for his actions, but consider how much you’d have to hate free will to come up with a political platform that advocates
killing unborn babies but not convicted murderers. A callous pragmatist might favor abortion and capital punishment. A devout Christian would
sanction neither. But it takes years of therapy to arrive at the liberal view.
I probably don't meet the standard of a "devout Christian", but I'm working at it.
