I find it interesting that the author was speculating in 2013 on the 2016 presidential election instead of concentrating on the 2014 midterm election.

And I’ll say this - he is not sure that Carson is a great conservative candidate (and I agree with that) - but he gives Hucskter and Santorum a free ride on their rampant liberalism outside of social policy.

It is blaringly obvious that Carson’s primary “qualification” to be a conservative leader is the color of his skin. A white physician with a similar background would never have gotten any attention at all. Just as a white state legislator or first term Senator like Obama could never have been a viable candidate for President.

Nothing against the man, who may very well deserve our support. I just find it sad that to be an effective potential leader we’ve developed a de facto skin color criterion. And that conservatives are buying into it to some extent.

This man is HHS Cabinet level or Surgeon General quality. He would round out a nice conservative cabinet

“The harvest is plenty, but the workers are few. Carson has shown up to work while many who claim to be on our side are out to lunch. I say we hand him a hard hat.”

I agree entirely. It’s refreshing to have someone who speaks his mind, without handlers, and tells you what he/she thinks - not what their consultants think they should tell you. That doesn’t mean he’s earned a nomination or a vote yet, but IMHO he is a big plus.

The author has avoided publishing Carson's views on all of the major issues. This is a feel good piece of pap with no substance at all. In his personal lunch did he even ask about
  1. Gun control
  2. removing the misnamed patriot act
  3. rolling back 0care
  4. getting rid of illegal immigration
  5. protecting Americans from unconstitutional seizures of their property
  6. etc.
Vast silence. All we know (from previous material) is that Carson wants to balance the books. A necessary, but by no means sufficient condition to be considered conservative.

He might be a brilliant guy and a fantastic surgeon, but he hasn’t demonstrated the ability to run a town council, much less the United States. I would like to see some executive experience at a state level before he runs for president.

This column is not meant to endorse Dr. Ben Carson

No????

Sounds like it is, to me.

Let him run for dog catcher -- to see if he is even electable. Because he will be going up against numerous political machines from other politians and the vetting process from the media.

He has already stumbled. Not a good sign, considering that there are no announcees yet.

He is an intelligent man who is bringing a lot of thoughtful debate to the fore front and hopefully he is getting the attention of some black voters. He will surely find a niche in which he can bring some improvements to the country but, he is not a person I can see as POTUS.

Carson seems too mild mannered.

I believe there will serious world crises in the coming years. Whether Carson can deal effectively with an expansive Russia, China, Iran, & the Middle East remains to be seen. Certainly he has no experience in foreign policy, & little executive experience.

People that are really good at what they do are often very bad at other endeavors.

As we have seen in the last few years, a president without foreign policy & military experience can create world instability by simply doing little or nothing to advance Western goals.

I’d like to see Carson get some government experience before he goes for the top job, perhaps as head of HHS or Surgeon General. I’d also like to get a look at how he functions as a government official.

Politics & bureaucracy has a way of turning granite into sand.

Throw out Jeb and the Doughnut Man and you realize the GOP has a very deep bench of capable people who could be president as compared to the Democrats. Personally, I don’t think Dr. Carson is ready for political office. That said, even with his lack of experience and conservative-lite principles he may hold, he’s still a thousand times better than Hillary, Lizzie, or any other Democrat running for the presidency.

Freepers are not one undifferentiated mass.

Unfortunately, just like liberals, too many of them mean well but IMO aren’t really using their heads when they advocate the likes of Powell, Rice, Cain, Keyes, West, or Carson for president because of their race.

Generally these candidates are not particularly conservative but certainly they haven’t been vetted via an actual, significant voting record, executive political experience, and/or campaigning effectiveness.

Just because some misguided Freepers egg them on doesn’t mean we all have to follow through in encouragement and support—particularly when such a campaign is likely to fragment the conservative primary vote against the GOPe.

If he's a stalking horse for the establishment, which is a theory I've heard posited from some conservatives, Carson did a very poor job of playing his role.

That is preposterous. He has been a very sincere man. I pray that politics does not change him.

The ONLY way you can disarm anyone is, if they allow it..
are law abiding, docile, able to be manipulated, and/or they are cowards..

others will be armed even if illegal..

Carson is probably a pretty nice guy, but he’s really squishy on the 2nd Amendment. Which has pretty much become my litmus test for politicians.

IMHO, he’s a no-go unless there just isn’t anyone else.

The way the nominating process used to work, convention delegates voted for their "favorite son" candidates (somebody from their own state or region) on the first ballot and if nobody got a majority voting would continue with delegates gradually moving to more electable candidates.

You can see that behavior continuing in the current process -- there are a lot of ideological favorite candidates early on who gradually drop out as they lose primaries and eventually a big name candidate gets the nomination -- but each voter only votes once (in his or her own state's primary).

Some voters go with their ideological soul mates, others make a more pragmatic choice. If the system is ever retooled, some kind of run-off might be included so that voters get a chance to decide which of the (just possibly) electable candidates they want once the obviously unelectable alternatives have been eliminated.
