Escalation 101: USA To Deploy 150 Tanks Near Russian Border
MINA ^ | November 26, 2014

Posted on 11/26/2014 8:03:01 AM PST by Fennie

The US Army plans to deploy about 150 tanks and armoured vehicles to NATO countries next year and some of the heavy armour may be stationed in Eastern Europe, a top American general said on Tuesday.

The move is part of a US effort dubbed Operaton Atlantic Resolve in the Baltic states and Poland to reassure allies anxious about a 'resurgent Russia', with American troops deploying for several months at a time to conduct joint exercises.

Nearly 50 armoured vehicles are already in place and another 100 M1 Abrams tanks and Bradley fighting vehicles will be "pre-positioned" in Germany and possibly elsewhere for the US troops conducting drills with NATO partners, Lieutenant General Ben Hodges said in a phone interview from Estonia.

I’ve seen MORE THAN ENOUGH of what you guys have been posting...it’s OBVIOUS to EVERYONE that you guys think the Polish Calvary will come to our rescue (see post 60), or, at worst, a bunch of our nukes that haven’t been looked at IN DECADES, and are destined for the trash heap before this president leaves office, will somehow defend us.

Sorry, but I believe in fighting with a military that is READY, rather than one that has been ABUSED for two decades now.

Russia's modernization of it's tactical nukes is very troubling.

And they did it with our taxpayer money, cool huh? (Money we appropriated to destroy all those old nukes was spent modernizing those old nukes into new nukes.)

Yeah, I had looked them up, but if you notice that poster was never interested in sourcing or supporting any of his claims and statements.

He won’t even tell us if he is current or past military, although that was all important to him, for others.

I have many friends who are active and retired military. I think I’ll take their word over yours.

Well I am one. Retired Air Force E-8. Communications and Intelligence 'fore I retired (ESC/AFIC/AIA/CSIR). Did a lot of staff work.

Here are MY words.

You are wrong. Obama does not = the military. I am ashamed at what he has done to us, but we'll survive and outlive him. He certainly has not taken over, and if you could conduct a poll (which the administration would never allow) you'd find the anti-democrat/Obama levels at 80% or more. Bank on it.

You also better believe that if he tries to use the military in an unconstitutional way (like voiding the elections or some other silly, conspiracy thing) it will be the military that will dispose of him.

Now about Russia.

THEY HAVE BEEN provoking the USA and NATO (which WE are still part of) and we have got to respond. I thought Obama would not. So this tank deployment is necessary, but I'd bet it doesn't even come from him.

Still, despite Obama, we HAVE to respond, or we might as well give Europe to the Russians. Then the USA is off the world stage, and unless you are a Paul-tard, that will be bad for us in thousands of ways.

I don't know what else to say except ask you all (not just you, AD, but every conservative) to grow a pair and stand up for our country. And YES, our signed and sworn alliances are part of our commitment and responsibility. If suddenly we're not going to support and defend NATO we need to abrogate the treaty entirely. Is that what you are suggesting?

Attack in what manner?

If I were guessing I would think they would begin by destroying or electrical grid, since we seem to have no inclination to protect it.

I lived before rural electrification was introduced so I know how to survive with out electricity but 90 to 95 percent of our population would not survive, the collapse of electrification.

Er, lots of people still used cavalry in 1939, the Germans included. The Russians had huge masses of cavalry until 1945. The Poles did rather well with their cavalry at the time, unlike the mythology on the subject. There was no charging tanks with lances. They were used as mobile infantry. The Poles were just outnumbered by a larger enemy with better equipment and then invaded by the Soviets as well, removing their strategic depth. They had no chance under those circumstances of fighting off the Panzers. The strategic situation at the moment is rather different though.

The point I responded to was the Poles using cavalry today, which is not true.

As for the Polish military budget, its 2% of their GDP, which in real terms is 2.5X that of Ukraine.

Other people have strategic interests too.

The Poles will defend their own interests, which I am informed, do not include being dictated to by the Russians. They seem to think they have their own sphere of influence, which includes the Baltics and at least Western Ukraine. At the moment most of our interests coincide with theirs, with greater or lesser weighting of values, as usual.

There are also people who have different problems than the US and don’t know or care what Sandra Fluke does or wants.

Whatever our problems they are trivial compared to those of the rest of the world, including Russia. They wish they had our problems, and we theirs. Everyone seems to expect that we are the superpower and they aren’t wrong, at the moment. Maybe in a few years things will be different, but for now, they aren’t.

The best way to approach strategic problems is to develop the ability to see things from other peoples perspectives. If you were a Pole, if you were a Russian, if you were a Lithuanian, if you were a German.

I take it you’ll be fine with Russia stationing missiles and bombers in Cuba?

Tanks take ground. Infantry holds ground. Artillery prepares ground for taking.

Close air support? Think of that as tanks that fly. The A-10 is probably the best close air support weapon ever devised. Protects your supply lines, and disrupts enemy supply lines.

"if the agreement has already been voided by Russia, what is the point"

You may contend they have "voided" the agreement, but I see no evidence they have VIOLATED it.

Their part of the bargain was also to remove nukes, heavy equipment and RUSSIAN/foreign troops from the old Warsaw Pact countries of Eastern Europe. They have done so and not returned.

In deference to what I THINK you may alluding to...the Russian aggression in Ukraine in contravention of the Budapest Agreements.

And there's no doubt Russia is in full violation.

Does that mean we should abandon a treaty that reunited Germany and freed the rest of the Warsaw Pact countries of Eastern Europe?

Is it worth the risk of a future Russia landing a dozen nukes in Eastern Europe...no matter how unlikely the risk may be?

I say honor the Two plus Four agreement and still beat them. That way some crazy General doesn't have an excuse to go off his meds and break something.

And, I don't think it serves US interests well to poke the Bear with a stick just because we think we can.

I have never served.

I will not repeat what has been disclosed to me by others. Get over it.

Russia is conducting practice cruise missle strikes on us and you want to park a few tanks on their border.

It’s not a good idea.

I beg to differ.
Huge amounts being spent now to prevent cyber attacks on the electrical grid, and other strategic systems as well, such as Gas.
Physical attacks are harder to defend against, but conversely will require an extensive special forces/sabotage unit deployment in the US. This is true of any country though, nobody has an electrical grid hardened against that.

We have not practiced cruise missile attacks on them ?
How would you know if we have ?
More importantly, how would they know ?

Anybody can rattle their sabers.

LOL, so you never served at all but you tried to use that as criteria, and then you tried your internet super secrets game as your veteran friends share military secrets with you that you can’t tell us about, but which you assure us is proof of your silly claims on this thread.

You have laid some whoppers on this thread.

I didn't say obama = the military.

I said that he's decimating our military.

I know what most of the military thinks of obama.

The reason Russia is becoming aggressive is because of what obama has and is doing to our military.

Instead of deploying a couple of tanks, how about we start rebuilding our military by increasing spending by 500%. That may give russia pause.

Then again, it may be too little too late.

Thanks for your service.

Don’t know if this is a good idea. The battlefield is a muti-dimensional environment. Land sea air space etc. Combined arms tactics...

One of the most important aspects of fighting a war is leadership. Unfortunately, our CIC is in concert with our enemies.
