BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. (AP) - Black Friday isn't just when shoppers rush to stores for holiday sales. It's also one of the busiest days of the year for gun purchases.
In the U.S., there are nine guns for every 10 people. Someone is killed with a firearm every 16 minutes. And every minute, gun shops make about 40 new requests for criminal background checks on people wanting weapons.
On Black Friday, the rush accelerates to nearly two checks a second, testing the limits of the National Instant Criminal Background Check System.
"We have a perfect storm coming," says Kimberly Del Greco, a manager in the FBI division that helps run the system, known as NICS.
Much of the responsibility for preventing criminals and the mentally ill from buying guns is shouldered by about 500 men and women who run the system from inside the FBI's criminal justice center, a gray office building with concrete walls and mirrored windows just outside Bridgeport, West Virginia.
Granted a rare glimpse into the inner workings of the NICS, The Associated Press was able to see first-hand why 512 gun sales a day effectively beat the system last year.
By federal law, NICS researchers must race against the clock: They have until the end of the third business day following an attempted firearm purchase to determine whether or not a buyer is eligible. After that, buyers can legally get their guns, whether or not the check was completed.

Here in Michigan Dunham’s Sports usually have some outstanding Black Friday deals on Modern Sporting Rifles. I wonder what they’ll have this year, with MSR prices already at or near record lows.

Looking into a shotgun for home protection. Mossberg keeps coming up. Any ideas where I can get a great deal? Will be sure to check out Dunhams too.
I remember back when Hillary and Bill slowed down checks one weekend like this.
It’s one of the reasons I got a Georgia Firearms License (later changed to Georgia Weapons Carry License).
If you have one here in Georgia, you just show that to the local gun store and fill out the Form 4473 and you’re done. No NICS check.
The first shotgun I ever actually bought (July 99) was a Mossberg Model 500 12 gauge Persuader. Out the door price (WalMart) was $205.99. For some reason, they don’t sell these any more.
Great shotgun!.....mag tube holds 8 shells, and one in the chamber.
Mossberg 500, Winchester 1300, or Remington 870. Not much difference between any of them, and each will last several generations.
The Remington has more aftermarket accessories available, if that is important to you.
Wow... the exact model I bought then is more than double in MSRP now.

Well I own a lot more than one, so until there are 9 guns for every 1 person, we need to keep buying.
The Feds are now after your Nail Gun and Flare guns for background checks. Please pass it on.
BRILLIANT! I-594 Requires Background Checks For Nail Guns, Flare Guns
Gun Broker’s a good place to start. Lots of new/used shotgun options under drop-down “browse categories” link at top. Also “narrow search” to Mossberg on left:

Look for one that has dual stocks, regular and hand gun, in a tight situation in home that hand gun stock is the better option. Hubby loves his. He has bad shoulders and the pistol grip stock fixed the issue. Better control.
With all the riots in fergerson people will start to think that maybe they should also arm themselves.
Especially if you live near a big LIBERAL CITY like Memphis or Detroit.
Walmart on the cheap. Mossbergs are solid inexpensive shotguns. Or better yet look for used. And do the deal privately and stay out of the system.
they make it sound like Black Friday sneaks up you.
It happens EVERY year.
“Mossberg keeps coming up. Any ideas where I can get a great deal?”
I got my Model 500A at Cabelas for around $300 IIRC. It’s a great little shotgun for a very reasonable amout of money.

In South Carolina, produce your CWP & there’s no NCIS check or fee.
The gungrabbers are getting desperate. They’re now trying to ostracize gun rights people like they once did with smokers.
BTW anyone who shuns me because I own guns isn’t worth knowing, anyway.
What a bunch of crap. 72 hours to do a simple criminal background check is NOT a “race against the clock”.
By the way, the results of the checks done on me usually come back within 2 minutes of submittal.
Walmart.
It's not a merchant website. Rather it's a list of user-submitted bargains they've found. And it has search features. Very handy for finding great deals.
Mossberg makes moderately priced shotguns. Most shops charge a transfer fee if you don’t buy from them. Add to that a shipping charge and it often makes more sense to purchase locally. There are also many dealers who don’t stock firearms but will order you anything you like for a modest markup if you are willing to wait a few days. Call around and ask.
