Congressional Republicans seethed while Democrats were cautiously excited on eve of President Obama's big announcement about his plans to ease deportation laws for millions of people living here illegally.
Im looking for big!" Rep. Jan Schakowsky, D-Ill., told the Washington Examiner, when asked what she hoped Obama would say in a prime time address on Thursday.
What we are hearing is it will be five million people who are now not going to be deported. Thats keeping families together, and thats huge in my district.
The president plans to make significant changes to U.S. immigration policy when he announces his plan to unilaterally protect about 5 million undocumented immigrants from deportation.
Of that 5 million, an estimated 4 million of them would qualify as parents of children who are citizens or legal residents or because of the length of time they have been in the country, multiple sources familiar with the presidents plan confirmed to the Washington Examiner.
House and Senate Republicans Wednesday were simmering in their opposition, many of them plotting a way to try to block Obamas executive action through the legislative process, perhaps by rescinding money for immigration-related programs in the upcoming government spending bill.
Recession is the only plan out there that has a track record of past success, said an aide to House Appropriations Committee Chairman Hal Rogers of Kentucky.
But the GOPs most conservative faction was talking more extreme options.
I will note that there is a federal statute that makes it a felony, with up to five years in jail, for anyone who aids or abets a foreigner to come unlawfully into the United States of America, Rep. Mo Brooks of Alabama said to a throng of reporters during a round of votes on Wednesday. And at some point, you have to evaluate whether the presidents conduct aids, abets, encourages or entices foreigners to unlawfully cross into the United States of America.
For the most part, Republicans were calling for a more measured response among their rank and file, despite the belief among most in the GOP that the president was, indeed, overstepping his authority.
We dont respond like third-graders to a third-grader move, said Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina.
Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, who is the GOP Senate whip, ruled out a government shutdown fight over Obamas announcement, despite the push from more conservative members not to rule out a fight over funding to stop the executive action.
Theres not going to be any drama associated with funding the government, Cornyn announced Wednesday.
Graham, a co-author of the bipartisan Senate immigration reform plan, warned that Obama was making a mistake because polls show the public does not support unilateral action but rather wants Congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform.
Politically, I think hes going to get a backlash, Graham said. Most people dont want him to do this by himself.
The president gave a preview of his prime time remarks at a dinner for 18 congressional Democrats Wednesday evening.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said she had other plans and couldnt make it.
Rep. Steve Lynch of Massachusetts, one of the few remaining House Democratic centrists and no fan of executive action, was not invited.
I can never support the president going around Congress, even when its my own president, Lynch said. That just sets a bad precedent. Would we be supporting George W. Bush going around us like this? I dont think so. Its the institutional relevance thats at stake here.
GOP simmers?
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
When 0bama and the Dem’s controlled both Houses they could have passed amnesty legally, but they wanted the GOP to be held responsible for it. Now the Dem’s are going to swallow it ...
The people that should be most upset with Obama are the Law Abiding Citizens ,the Criminals are supporting him
The damage will be done.
Liars and cheaters, the SOS ‘Rat party.
All on the taxpayer dime.
We are going to focus only on criminal illegals and not prosecute run of the mill illegals. Also, because we're prosecuting only violent criminal illegals, the run of the mill illegals get the reward of green cards, social security, and other benefits.
Because of prosecutorial discretion illegals qualify not only for non-prosecution but also for rewards and prizes.
That's just about the damnedest logic I ever heard in my life.
I predict most of the blowback over the next couple days - in the main stream media - will be how he didn’t go big enough, should have done x/y/z, etc. We won’t hear from folks that are unhappy because of what he did, just those complaining about what he didn’t do...
Keeping families together. How did that situation arise in the first place?
1. Are they saying an illegal has an anchor baby and now the baby is a citizen and if the parents are deported they will be separated from the baby? Nobody is forcing them to separate from their kid.
2. Or are they saying their relatives moved to the US legally but they moved here illegally and if they are deported they will be separated from the relatives?
3. Or are they saying one spouse moved here legally but the other came illegally?
I keep hearing this "separation of families" by the Treason party and of course Republicans never question just what the Treason party means exactly. Either way the LAW is being broken in each scenario but the Treason party is making this appear as if Republicans are evil doers breaking up families ala slaveowners or Nazis. This is how the left gets an edge in, by using these carefully crafted words and phrases and what ticks me off is Repubs NEVER confront them on this BS.
arpaio says trying to give soetoro forgery and fraud info to someone this week.
This will be the Dems undoing in more ways than one......................
What I understand is that as soon as the next President takes office Obama’s temporary amnesty is void and up to the new President. We need to make sure we put in a conservative who will simply take advantage of the rolls of registered illegal immigrants to round them up for immediate deportation. We need to advertise this now and perhaps scare some of the illegals from taking jobs away from Americans.
CALL YOUR DEMOCRAT REPS AND SENATORS, PEOPLE!!!!!!!
CALL YOUR DEMOCRAT REPS AND SENATORS, PEOPLE!!!!!!! (and tell them you are a p*ssed off DEMOCRAT)
