Police: Woman attacked, burned at Fairmount Park still in critical condition

A woman who was sexually assaulted, struck on the head and set on fire at Fairmount Park suffered burns on 55 percent of her body and remains in critical condition, a Wichita police official said Monday.

Police aren’t sure if it was a random or targeted crime, said police Capt. Troy Livingston.

Later Monday, he said that hospital staff had told him that her condition had improved slightly.

At a briefing for reporters Monday morning, Livingston called it “a disgusting crime,” pleaded for the public’s help in providing information and stressed that any tip could help. He asked people to call investigators at 316-268-4181, 316-268-4191 or to call Crime Stoppers, 316-267-2111.

Police have been able to get only limited information from the woman, he said. A police report on the crime, released Monday morning, said the woman said she had been raped and burned by an unknown black male. That was the only description of the attacker provided in the report, and Livingston gave no information about any possible suspect during the media briefing.

Wichita State to host forum on safety issues after woman found burned, assaulted in park Woman sexually assaulted, burned in attack, Wichita police say Police have been able to get only limited information from the woman, he said. A police report on the crime, released Monday morning, said the woman said she had been raped and burned by an unknown black male. That was the only description of the attacker provided in the report, and Livingston gave no information about any possible suspect during the media briefing.

Someone reported seeing a fire and hearing someone yell, the police report said.

“Our hearts go out to the victim. This is a tough deal,” Livingston said.

“Somebody out there knows what happened, and we need that information.”

He said he was limited in explanation he could give about the 36-year-old woman, including how she came to be in the park Friday night. Livingston said the crime, what he termed a sexual assault, aggravated battery and arson, occurred between 10:50 and 11:15 p.m. Friday. The park, in northeast Wichita, is just south of Wichita State University, and a school official has condemned the attack. Investigators are trying to determine whether some of the attack might have occurred outside the park.

Because of the seriousness of the woman’s injuries, Livingston said, homicide detectives are investigating the attack.

Although police have knocked on doors throughout the neighborhood around the park and called in a number of people for interviews, “right now we have very little to go on,” Livingston said.

Wichita police will be holding what they call an “impact meeting” about the crime in the near future, he said. Wichita police also will be working with WSU police and realize there is a concern for student safety, he said.

Someone saw the fire, and firefighters arrived to handle the fire, he said. While putting out the fire, they found the victim and notified police.

Although there have been other attacks fairly close to the park, those crimes were “vastly different,” and there appears to be no connection to Friday’s crime, Livingston said.

Fire investigators are involved in processing the arson case, Livingston said, and he said he didn’t want to speculate on or discuss how the fire was started.

The woman had severe and scattered burns, according to police. She had cuts on her head, and police think the attacker struck her with an object, Livingston said.

Friend of mine lived on the west edge of this park. gunfire was a nightly occurance. its just a few blocks south of Wichita State University. Not anyplace you want to be at night if you are light complected and not armed.

to the attack, it is irrelevant. as to why she’d be with this guy i the first place, it would explain more and help the police understand how it came to be -random vs otherwise kind of attack.

Interesting observation. I think you are on to something: everyone is avoiding the subject of expanding violence from a particular sector and are turning to online shopping and other techniques to avoid inadvertent contact.

How long before we stay indoors all the time and thugs are the only ones roaming the streets?

Thanks.

We’re almost there already, but I think people will still congregate outdoors where there is sufficient strength in numbers. Much of our urban populations can’t reach many of the areas frequented by whites for leisure (malls being the exception due to mass transit), and the blacks you would encounter in such areas are there for the same reasons you would be.

I remember as child going to various lakes with the family on day trips, and how absolute chaos (not violence, just chaos) would ensue when you would hear the whistles of counselors leading the “urban kids” off buses. Those places used for that have fallen into disrepair or closed as funding dried up, and private clubs have replaced them for many people. Even at the Jersey shore, going to a beach with a slightly higher fee greatly improves the caliber of visitor.

What side would you call me on?

What side would you call my good friend on?

What side will you call my co-worker on?

What side is "our" side?

What side is "our" side?

The poster was clear......

and our side, the side of righteousness and goodness,

If you aren't sure what side you fall on, you're probably not on "ours".

You know what’s odd here?

Until your post, skin color never entered my mind.

I’m obviously never going to fit in.

Sorry FRiend.....

I just get racism from blacks, whites, reds, brown's....and such.

I hate racism..with a passion.

I think it's so ridiculous....

I was just having a conversation the other day with someone...where I said...I can never understand people that have been discriminated against...do the EXACT same thing to other people.

I'm part American Indian....and some of the most racist folks I know...are American Indians. Makes no sense............

Sorry for the confusion....

FRegards,

No problem, thanks for the reply.

I must admit it stung a little, and unfairly.

You’ve set it right.
