U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, waves to the crowd at a Republican victory party on Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2014, in Austin, …
WASHINGTON Within minutes of polls closing in Kentucky, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell was declared the victor of a race some doubted he could win and many more hoped he would lose.
Like most recent congressional leaders, McConnell who in 2009 declared that his partys No. 1 goal would be to defeat President Barack Obama had become a powerful symbol of his party and a major target for Democrats. His win in Kentucky Tuesday night was the first step toward realizing his career-long dream of becoming Senate majority leader. Outlining his potential approach toward leading the Senate, McConnell delivered what rang at first blush as a wildly optimistic view.
Just because we have a two-party system, doesnt mean we have to be in perpetual conflict, McConnell said in a lengthy victory speech in Louisville hours after polls closed.
A divided, partisan Washington, however, is only part of the problem for Congress. The more pressing problem for a potential Majority Leader McConnell than the gulf between the parties is the divisions within his own. Its a reality that House Speaker John Boehner of Ohio has grappled with for four years, with mixed success.
For McConnell and Senate Republicans, governing in the majority could prove to be more difficult than winning it was.
The first test of McConnells ability to manage intraparty divisions could come as soon as lawmakers return to Washington later this month for a lame-duck session. Congress will have to fund the government (again) to stave off a shutdown, approve a sweeping Department of Defense authorization bill, potentially approve an Iran sanctions measure, and also could clear Eric Holders replacement as U.S. attorney general.

“Get yourselves a life, pitiful authors of this stupid article, Meredith Shiner and Jon Ward”
I agree. They’re looking for that tiny ray of sunshine today, not happening.
That would be great but I would bet McConnell would not let that happen nor would the other RINOs up there. McConnell is just another version of bonehead, except in the Senate. Note that Bonehead has done nothing to support any tea party type, ever.
Loose your belt and get to work on undoing yesterday’s results. You know you have the power to git-er-done.
McConnell can pound sand if he thinks he can control Ted. I’m stunned that this Dingy Harry Reid wannabe has the gall to even think he can silence the Tea Party or Ted Cruz.
Just because the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor doesn't mean we have to be in perpetual conflict. We can destroy the Democrats entirely and then rebuild them as an inoffensive and productive party. But that destruction step has hardly started.
It will be very nasty and ugly to try and unseat McConnell, President Cruz should be running for Speaker of the House and replace bonehead, the SPEAKER is not required to be a Member of Congress and can also be a sitting SENATOR.
Right. Well put.
Yeah, they would be quite formidable if they worked together. I really don’t care who is in charge as long as they are working in the same direction like a boulder completely blocking Hussein’s actions that are not in our best interest as a nation.
No, it is important to keep the lid on McConnell. If he tries to lead it will be a disaster.
In my heart I feel Ted Cruz has a plan for McConnell and America...and the two plans don’t necessarily involve each other.
Team Mitch
or . Team Cruz?
Cruz is connecting outside of DC. I sent one email to him (as a Texas voter), now I'm constantly receiving emails from him describing his positions, what he's doing, etc. I've never received this kind of correspondence from a Senator or Representative.
Call Cruz and encourage him.
Yahoo is one of the standard bearers for the MSM electronic. This piece acknowledges that left wing radical elitists are scared to death of Ted Cruz.
Media “Meme One” : attack anyone who threatens our money!
Cruz threatens the media’s huge subsidies from government. So Mitch must rein him in.
“Turtle meets Lion” tends to end badly for the turtle.
Almost everyone elected last night, plus Mike Lee and many others, can be considered to be in his caucus. What a stupid remark.
Yahoo News back as usual to put their liberal spin on things and which ways they can begin to get back what outcomes that they would benefit from. They always leak out their fears and hopeful ways of causing fractions in the republican party. Ted Cruz is not going anywhere, lightweight authors.
