CDC Finally Admits that Ebola Can Float through the Air … 3 Feet
CDC ^ | 10/27/14

Posted on 10/27/2014 9:05:45 AM PDT by Enlightened1

Droplet spread happens when germs traveling inside droplets that are coughed or sneezed from a sick person enter the eyes, nose, or mouth of another person. Droplets travel short distances, less than 3 feet (1 meter) from one person to another.

A person might also get infected by touching a surface or object that has germs on it and then touching their mouth or nose.

***

Clean and disinfect commonly touched surfaces like doorknobs, faucet handles, and toys, since the Ebola virus may live on surfaces for up to several hours.

They were following CDC guidelines as they existed then, if at all possible. The guidelines changed daily. The CDC screwed this one up big, and left hospitals to fend for themselves. Important lesson learned. For the rest of the Ebola outbreak, and whatever else comes our way in the future, we have learned NOT to trust the CDC or any of the PC crap they spew.

Enlightened1, if you notice on your definition there are qualifications to the definitions like “ Military. (of ground forces)”, and “Aeronautics. (of an aircraft)”, what is missing is “Epidemiology. (of the spread of disease)”

The kind of definition of airborne some people are espousing here is completely illegitimate scientifically. By that broad definition absolutely every disease is airborne and therefore all spread with the same risk. You could take an AIDS patient and blow him up with a hand grenade, and when his blood splatters on you through the air 20 ft. away now AIDS is no longer sexually transmitted it is airborne. That is ridiculous. It is still a disease transmitted by fluids, not air, even if you sling the fluids through the air.

IF EBOLA WAS AIRBORNE MANY ON DUNCANS PLANE WOULD HAVE IT AND 70 PEOPLE AT THE TEXAS HOSPITAL WOULD HAVE IT!!!!

“Anyway how is this not the same as the flu or the common cold that infects many people every year?”
Both the CDC and I already explained that. I’ll try again. The common cold/flu is epidemiologically “airborne” because it CAN STAY SUSPENDED IN THE AIR FOR LONG PERIODS ON DUST PARTICLES AND BE INHALED BY SOMEONE ELSE MINUTES< EVEN HOURS LATER. Ebola cannot.

“why are 30 countries, such as the UK, Saudi Arabia, France, Russia, China, Japan, Nigeria, etc..., are banning people from the Ebola stricken countries???”

Your countries are WRONG. See here:
https://www.internationalsos.com/ebola/index.cfm?content_id=435&language_id=ENG

Most of the countries banning it have backward medical systems unable to cope. Why do people trample people at large events when something scary happens. FEAR.

“You have yet to convince me.”
If you simply look at the evidence of who has contracted the disease it should be readily apparent.

“A few weeks ago we were assured that the likelihood of any cases of Ebola in the U.S. were negligible. And what happened only a few days later? “

That simply is not true. People don’t seem to listen. Here are quotes from Frieden, with dates, and sources below.

“I have no doubt that we’ll stop this in its tracks in the U.S.,” Frieden said at news conference on Sept. 30. “The bottom line here is that I have no doubt that we will control this importation, or this case, of Ebola so that it does not spread WIDELY in this country.” Two cases of nurses is hardly a widespread disease.
http://www.latimes.com/nation/nationnow/la-na-four-ebola-quotes-haunt-frieden-20141016-story.html

““Unfortunately, it is possible in the coming days we will see additional cases of Ebola,” Frieden said Sunday. “ Oct 12

The CDC provided MINIMUM guidelines. Nurses at the hospital, by the nurses union’s own admission, considered the classes on Ebola handling optional. Once the CDC found that nurses, and hospitals couldn’t be trusted with minimum guidelines they offered some stricter and more specific guidelines. Again, NOT the CDCs fault.

Umm my link was to the Wash post article to partially illustrate the L.Bourouiba MIT study of the fluid dynamics of sneeze ejecta. I reloaded the WaPo page, which crashed on the graphic, but could not find the text you provided in your reply. Is there a further link on the wapo page I missed? Is your citation from the Bourouiba study?

In any case the study indicated both large droplet and smaller drops traveled much farther than previously assumed, regardless of droplet loading, thus calling into question the efficacy of the CDC “3 foot droplet rule of thumb” for HCW safety purposes.

The much farther travel of smaller droplets or mist presents the need for more study in the formation of fomites as the landed fine mists drops reform into the larger droplets. Much in the same way as a Windex mist on glass resolves itself into larger and larger drops becoming flows.

You'll note that on Bourouiba’s site:
https://lbourouiba.mit.edu/

That even while the large droplet photos are cropped, showing instances in which the bulk travel a measured 70cm, it is clear that more traveled farther. The fine mist photos illustrate similar increased distances.

The viability of any specific virus in sneeze ejecta is a different issue altogether. While not an airborne as per classic definition, the aerosol distribution of EVD in droplets and mist is real.

Not approved for contact with aircraft structural components as in the interior of the aircraft. It will corrode steel and aluminum, and initiate galvanic reaction between dissimilar metals as found in the floor and support structure of the aircraft. iT is impossible to thoroughly clean the seats without total overhaul of the seats. Carpets must be removed from aircraft to thoroughly clean them. The seat tracks are impossible to scrub clean of puke, blood, spit, or any spilled liquids. If you put oxygenated cleaners on them, you degrade their structure. The overhead compartments and wall panels must be removed from the aircraft to thoroughly clean them as well .A wipe down and vacuum of the interior is not a cleaning, but just a spruce up.

You can use anything you want to clean an airplane, but you void the airworthiness certification once you use non approved materials. The airplane then becomes a nice and very expensive lawn ornament.

But it is true. President Obama, speaking at the Centers for Disease Control on September 16, 2014 at 4:01 PM:

First and foremost, I want the American people to know that our experts, here at the CDC and across our government, agree that the chances of an Ebola outbreak here in the United States are extremely low. We’ve been taking the necessary precautions, including working with countries in West Africa to increase screening at airports so that someone with the virus doesn’t get on a plane for the United States. In the unlikely event that someone with Ebola does reach our shores, we’ve taken new measures so that we’re prepared here at home. (emphasis mine)

Here's the link. http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2014/09/16/remarks-president-ebola-outbreak

If you want to quibble about my use of "negligible" vs. President Obama's use of the phrase "chances ... are extremely low" you are free to do so, but in my opinions it's a distinction without a difference.

In your post to RummyChick you included three links. I naturally went to what you labeled as “Long form source scientific link:” because I am not interested in hype, but facts. Someone saying something travels “five times farther” without context is utterly meaningless. Was the original distance picometers, or light years? This was the link you gave.
http://aem.asm.org/content/73/6/1687.long

Thank you for posting the study. I am not meaning to dismiss its significance. It is certainly true that surface contamination of biology or wet paint or whatever tends to spread rapidly via hands touching it then other surfaces.

Fortunately sneezing is not a common symptom of early ebola. When a patient has late stage ebola and they are likely to be emitting a lot of contaminated fluid, if they have any sense they will already be isolated. Unfortunately many not only don’t have sense, they are selfish liars.

Every case in Nigeria was due to lies perpetrated by one man (Patrick Sawyer)in health care that should have known better. Duncan bringing it to America was based on lies. The family of the woman that exposed him said she had a miscarriage and bit her tongue and that is why she was bleeding. He lied on the flight screening. etc.

What people need to understand is that being on a plane or bus with someone who has it and is contagious will NOT get you the disease simply from breathing the same air. If you are on a plane or a bus with someone sneezing, coughing nearby, you should ALWAYS be concerned about catching something. If they are bleeding all over the place, in today’s ebola situation, they need to be removed, and you need to disinfect and quarantine until it is proven that it is not from ebola.

Did you look at the study I linked where they actually did it to a plane?

It is not a matter of “extremely low” vs. “negligible”, it is a matter of “any cases” vs. “outbreak”. The “experts at the CDC” have long indicated the probability of some cases here in the U.S., but extremely low likelihood of an outbreak/epidemic which is what people are fearing. I don’t think hazmat suits and gas masks are having record sales because people are afraid 20 people in the country may get ebola. They are afraid ANY case may become an epidemic. It is THAT fear that the government is trying to assuage.

If it isn’t written into the airline’s manual, it means nothing.,

The Maintenance manual published by the airline is part of the continued airworthiness certificate of that aircraft as approved by the FAA, and all parts, procedures, and materials used on the aircraft must be listed in the manual by the airline operating the particular aircraft.

Rules governing what can and can’t be done on an airliner are not like what you can do to your car.

“If it isn’t written into the airline’s manual, it means nothing.,”

I don’t want to pay for full access to myboeing.com to get access to the manuals. Do you have access to a manual, or are you just blowing smoke, because the FAA apparently thinks it is safe and effective as actually tested on aircraft?

It has to be in the United maint manual approved by Boeing and submitted to the FAA as part of their part 121 certification.

There is no such thing as “blanket approval” when it comes to 121 certification.

Part 91, maybe, but not 121.
