NEW YORK (AP) A doctor who became New York City's first Ebola patient was praised for getting treatment immediately upon showing symptoms, and health officials stressed that the nation's most populous city need not fear his wide-ranging travel in the days before his illness began.
Mayor Bill de Blasio and Gov. Andrew Cuomo urged residents not to be alarmed by the doctor's diagnosis Thursday, even as they described him riding the subway, taking a cab and bowling since returning to New York from Guinea a week ago. De Blasio said all city officials followed "clear and strong" protocols in their handling and treatment of him.
"We want to state at the outset that New Yorkers have no reason to be alarmed," de Blasio said. "New Yorkers who have not been exposed are not at all at risk."
The doctor, Craig Spencer, a member of Doctors Without Borders, reported Thursday morning coming down with a 103-degree fever and diarrhea. He was being treated in an isolation ward at Manhattan's Bellevue Hospital, a designated Ebola center.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which will do a further test to confirm the initial results, has dispatched an Ebola response team to New York. President Barack Obama spoke to Cuomo and de Blasio Thursday night and offered the federal government's support. He asked them to stay in close touch with Ron Klain, his "Ebola czar," and public health officials in Washington.

They want this "created epidemic" to be a money maker for some company here in the USA....and I believe it is Zmapp. Obama will order a million doses....just in case. What a crock this whole thing is.
de Blasio declared that sharing a 32 oz. Big Gulp does not constitute bodily fluid contact.
Intersting speculation. His actions run contrary to the selfless nature of the work typically done by Doctors Without Borders. He must have seen an awful lot of deaths from ebola over there and experienced first hand frustration at the lack of facilities and funding for treatment and cures.
Could this have been a misguided attempt to 'bring it home' to make it a problem here that would get attention and serious research funding?
Just started cleaning my companies equipment. Pulled it out of Dallas area 2 weeks ago. Just let it sit here untouched for 14 days.
Well, Obama finally got the next Ebola patient zero he apparently wanted. I wonder if this will be the one to light the Ebola fire in the U.S.? If not, plenty more in West Africa where this one came from.
BTW, think of the freak-out coming this winter when flu and Norovirus hit. Think theyll have enough ambulances with police escorts for the millions that get sick with those this winter? Will they shut down every building, factory, bus, subway, or shopping center utilized by someone suspected (or proven to have) Ebola?
Now, I am not on the ballot this fall, Obama stressed. ... But
make no mistake: My policies are on the ballot every single one of them. (Including unrestricted West African air flights.)

Thank you Obama, for your “fundamental [Ebola] transformation”. Now would you please do something to prevent more Ebola cases from arriving in the U.S. from West Africa? Obviously your current policies are not working (assuming your goal is to actually keep Ebola OUT of the U.S. as once again I cannot tell if you are unbelievably stupid or just plain evil).
He’s afraid we dummies will think we can get it by looking at the same subway sign. This is the way they view us. They just put a gigantic unusable lane in the middle of West End Avenue to keep the northbound and southbound cars from bumping into each other. Ebola is so much more serious and they are going to have the same approach: Do what they don’t need to do and skip what they really need to do.
The lab tests give false negatives if they’re administered too soon before symptoms begin. Not really useful for the purpose you are proposing.

Ebola RNA is not present in the blood during the incubation period, and may not be present for 1-2 days after symptoms begin.
Quarantine for 30 days is the only way to prevent this from happening again and again. Whether that happens over there or over here is above my pay grade, but it needs to happen yesterday.
