A man who said he was having trouble with his car convinced Kenneth Byrd, age 67, to open his door. His wife and 19 year old granddaughter were at home at the time.
That was all the opportunity the three man home invasion crew needed. The trio burst into the home, guns drawn and threatened the residents.
According to local media reports, what happened next was nothing short of terrifying:
The Byrds were pushed to the back of their home and instructed to open a safe.
When the men tried to rape the couple’s granddaughter, Byrd grabbed a gun and exchanged shots with the assailants, [Sheriff Kenneth Sealey] said.
The men fled in Byrd’s car.

That’s something I hadn’t thought of, but a real possibility. He got an extra dose of toughness from somewhere. Three of them & one of him; at this point one in the morgue, & it’s not him.
Prayers he makes a full recovery, helps send the other two off for long prison terms, and gets to relish every sight of his granddaughter, knowing she is fine because of what he, with God’s help, did on her behalf.
I didn’t know this, but it turns out that if you bring a gun to a robbery, you are responsible for every death. So the surviving two will be charged with murder on account of their dead accomplice. Looks like long prison terms ahead for them for sure.
May have something to do with being where all the cops and firemen (mostly military vets) and their families shop. Maybe there's a sporting goods store's worth of sidearms under all those winter jackets.
At 67 yrs old I wonder if he is a combat vet.
