An Obama administration health official said Sunday that U.S. protocols on Ebola failed because they originally were intended for African field hospitals, while the White House came under another round of attacks for its refusal to restrict travel from nations suffering epidemic outbreaks.
Dr. Anthony Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said the original Centers for Disease Control and Prevention instructions for dealing with the virus were taken from the World Health Organizations protocol for Africa, where conditions are much different from those in U.S. hospitals.
Two nurses caring for an Ebola patient flown into the U.S. from Africa have contracted the virus as a result of those flawed rules, and dozens more people are under observation or could be threatened by contact with those nurses.
The answer is that the protocol that was originally recommended was a protocol thats a WHO protocol thats best fitted for out in the field. It doesnt cover every single aspect of your skin, Dr. Fauci said on Fox News Sunday.
That worked in the field, Dr. Fauci said. Whats very clear now, if youre in an intensive care setting, doing things you would never do in the bush or in the field in Africa, very invasive-type procedures, that that is not the optimal way.
Officials at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital took out full-page ads in two newspapers Sunday to apologize for mistakes in their treatment of Ebola patient Thomas Duncan of Liberia, who died Oct. 8 after flying to Dallas to visit family.

PING!
Well, now that blame has been assigned, we can all frown at that incompetent protocol when we pass it in the hall and move along now.
You can’t get ebola on a bus but if yo got sum ebola don’t ride the bus cause peeples could catch it.
So, inadequate measures (error 1) which should have been recognized as inadequate (error 2) and recommended after the fact (error 3).
Oh, and blame the people who put their lives on the line (error 4).
Not blocking travel to/from obola infested countries (error 5).
Appointment of a political hack as obolaczar (error 6) while not firing the current political hack/incompetent at CDC (error 7).
Deadly mistakes. I am sure I have missed many more.
And giving travel approval to a nurse who had a low fever.
So, those protocols were designed for “african field hospitals” Is that supposed to be an excuse?
No wonder over 200 african healthcare workers have ..... died
d’OH!
and - are those the same protocols that are supposed to protect our deployed military healthcare workers (yeah zerO, anyone who draws blood for testing is a “healthcare worker” and exposed to “patients’” - body fluid) and support staff? the ones being given only a mask and gloves and bottle of hand sanitizer?
The nurses would not have needed any protocol if travel from Ebola hot spots would have been banned several months ago. This is like releasing a bunch of mice into someone’s home and then blaming the infestation on the inadequate pest control methods used by the homeowner.
And just last week all the statist were crowing about how bad medical conditions were in Africa.
