Lockheed Martin, the aerospace and defense conglomerate based in Bethesda, Md., is claiming to have made a major breakthrough in nuclear fusion, which could lead to development of reactors small enough to fit on the back of a truck within a decade.
In the simplest terms, nuclear fission breaks a single atom into two whereas nuclear fusion combines two atoms into one.
Fusion, the holy grail of nuclear power, creates three to four times as much energy as fission. More importantly, fusions key advantage over fission is that it does not produce cancer-causing radioactive waste.

Tom McGuire, who heads the project, told Reuters that his team had been working on fusion energy at Lockheeds Skunk Works program for the past four years, but decided to go public with the news now to recruit additional partners in industry and government to support their work....

It’s nice to meet a newer Freeper who is aware of this. So few give a damn about the Death Cultists that I hardly post anymore. I hope some of my earlier efforts helped inform you. Here’s one from 2002 on DDT alone.

Think of the 10s of millions of death due to the DDT ban as simply a pilot program for much, much worse. I’ve a longer version of my tag line, but it’s close enough to get the idea of the threat level.
“Not to mention that whole industries would be born.”
Obviously, that should have been, “Not to mention that whole industries would disappear.”
Proofreaders on the other hand, will still be in high demand!
Over the years I've seen many ideas that had the potential to "overturn the apple cart" and even contributed to a few. Some did.
Are you implying that there is some conspiracy killing them, or simply observing that many don't pan out?
Just curious, really...
My post #43 may shed more light on my thinking.
I don’t think there is any great conspiracy as such, just an inertia among people and organizations resisting their apple cart being upset. With big ideas, it is natural that the ‘apple cart people’ are also big idea people, (old big ideas) and powerful enough to make it difficult to move them out of the way.
The only exception may be the Socialist angle, but even there, Socialists don’t have to get together an plan the resistance, they all know what to do.
Unless you count Satan as the Great Conspirator. THAT I buy into, hook, line, sinker.
Thanks for the clarification.
I guess I remain naïve in my “advanced” years and still believe in the power of innovation to disrupt and improve our world. Creative destruction.
There is always resistance to change; some, of course, unfair. But if we can maintain some semblance of a free market then the new will replace the old.
Perhaps I read too much science fiction in the 60’s... ;-)
I maybe haven't been very good at explaining myself. I believe in the power of innovation too, strongly.
What we have here though, is such a big idea that I'm not convinced it will get off the ground in our lifetime.
That is an idea which probably is impractical for reasons other than ‘political’.
That makes it much different than the Lockheed idea.
Well, once you get past the skin falling off dead part.
