Sad news via Radio Iowa regarding the passing of Libertarian Party Senate candidate Douglas Butzier:
The pilot who died in a plane crash near Dubuque late last night was the Libertarian candidate for Iowas U.S. Senate seat.
The family of Douglas Butzier has confirmed Butzier was piloting the plane that crashed near the Dubuque Regional Airport at about 11 p.m. Monday. No one else was in the plane.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the single-engine plane took off from the Ankeny Regional Airport at about 10 p.m. and crashed at about 11 p.m., about a mile north of the runway in Dubuque. Butzier, who was an ER doctor, was born in Mount Pleasant and grew up in Cedar Falls. Butzier, who was 59 years old, has been working at Dubuque Mercy Hospital for the past 17 years.
Would this plane have instrumentation guidance for poor weather visibility conditions? If so how can pilots still make errors as to crash?
Saddest part is that his hubris brought two others down with him.
New IFR rating?
Conditions are conditions, you know, IFR is meant to address just that.
Here’s a few things I follow:
1. No hard IFR without redundant vacuum and possible redundant gyros
2. Enough fuel to fly to VFR conditions.
3. Don’t do a second approach after missed approach. Go somewhere better.
4. Don’t let ‘getting there’ be part of the problem.
5. Don’t fly where slow air masses meet low pressure systems.
Seems like you are mentioning #4 and I think #3 is also in play. There’s a reason the first approach was missed....sorry to hear the news.
I met the last guy to talk to JFK Jr. He told me John had preflighted his airplane and his elbows had some of that greasy dirt on them, where it’s hard to see without a mirror. The guy told John about the dirt and offered him a shop rag, and JFK, Jr said, “ No thanks, I’ll was up on Martha’s Vineyard”.

*wash
Back in 2000, our Governor, Mel Carnahan, died in a plane crash while campaigning for US Senate. It was a good campaign move, as he ended up beating John Ashcroft in a really tight race that he might have lost had he lived. But it turned out NOT to be a good move for him in the long run.
As for us Missourians, it's taken several years to finally be rid of the Carnahan clan; it's about the only worthwhile thing Lacy Clay has ever done.
Sad.
It probably helps the country, though, in that it becomes less likely the Democrats retain the Senate with him out of the race.
A highly successful person gets their license, buys a plane and really wants to be somewhere on schedule. So they fly in conditions that they shouldnt.

JFK Jr. comes to mind...
Except for the “A highly successful person” part, yes.
“How will this affect the Iowa senate race?”
I would think it can only be a positive in that the Democrat should now be more likely to lose.
Unless Libertarians now are so open about their liberalism now that they will switch their vote to the Dem.
Nice joke. Too bad you messed it up.
Wasn’t JFK Jr. also flying a Piper Malibu, at night?
Last Iowa US Senate race saw the Libertarian with 25,000 votes out of 1.1 million cast.
I just looked it up, it was a Piper Saratoga II.
“Flying is not inherently dangerous but, like the sea, it is terribly unforgiving of mistakes.”
RIP
There’s a novel out there where the bad guys rig the plane to stall. It certainly makes for great conspiracy stories. I blame: the Clintons.
Sorry this took place.
The usual thoughts for family, friends, and associates...
Death sucks!
This problem sure doesn’t avoid the well to do or accomplished do it. You’re right.
Remember John Kennedy and his wife.

Are you talking about the crash that killed 3 docs?
He will still get 0.9% of the vote.
