he Supreme Court has turned away appeals from five states seeking to prohibit same-sex marriages, paving the way for an immediate expansion of gay and lesbian unions.
The justices on Monday did not comment in rejecting appeals from Indiana, Oklahoma, Utah, Virginia and Wisconsin.
The court's order immediately ends delays on marriage in those states. Couples in six other states should be able to get married in short order.
That would make same-sex marriage legal in 30 states and the District of Columbia.
But the justices have left unresolved for now the question of same-sex marriage nationwide.

Quite frankly, I don’t see that one at all. First Amendment issues will prevent the actually ordering of performing marriages.
This is just an argument I’ve never bought.
No, they have been counted recently. If DC gets statehood, then it’s a no-go.
Right now states are the only way to go. Congress and the Courts are closed to it.
You don’t understand the Article V process.
You are wrong on all points. I have seen your comments before and they are unsubstantiated and in error.
There are not enough in America that support that. We are a rapidly dwindling minority.
If I only had a nickel for every time I’ve heard that.
Ha!!!
Well. In the words of Emperor Joseph in Amadeus ... there it is.
Since we are being succinct. I disagree with your assessment. ; )
12 states have passed laws allowing same sxex marriage. The rest of the states have either passed laws banning it or have refused to recognize it.
Am Article V process puts it into the hands of states and grassroots. It’s the only way to rid the country of the perversion at this point in time.
Hearing won’t help those that can’t comprehend.
That's just not going to happen. Are Catholic priests & churches forced to marry divorcees? Are Jewish rabbis & synagogues forced to perform interfaith marriages? Are Mormon temples forced to marry non-Mormons? Are any religious institutions forced to perform any marriages with which they disagree?
Obviously, the nonsense that has gone on with Christian bakeries, photographers, and other businesses is terrible, and a bad sign of things to come. But the First Amendment will pretty clearly prevent even the most activist judge from crossing the line between Christian-run businesses (which are, unfortunately, covered by various "public accomodations" laws) and religious leaders/houses of worship.
Counted by whom? What is the list of 38 states?
Sodomy is the natural order of things. As the people turn to sin, death and destruction follow unopposed.
You’re not serious. You’re a joker with too much time on your hands. I’m off now but will return later. You can try again from your easy chair to type an explanation how an Article V process would be an “unmitigated disaster”.
Amen to that, bro. Amen.
So, you think that every state that has either passed a law banning same-sex marriage or has "refused to recognize it" would ratify a marriage amendment? That is wishful thinking, at best.
It would be right in that ballpark. Hell, NC just voted in the constitutional amendment in 2012. That was the event that triggered the whole final push by the left. There are easily 30.
Legal rights associated with civil marriage are determined by the states, and the conservative position is to support state and local government instead of legislation from the national court. Consider what might have happened had the SC refused to hear Roe v. Wade and left that issue up to the states.
SCOTUS ping.
Agreed.
