US Airlines scramble after 100s of passengers had contact with Ebola patient

Hundreds of airline passengers were exposed to the Liberian national before he landed in Dallas, last month, as it is revealed that he took at least three flights to get from Monrovia, Liberia to Texas.

Officials announced that Thomas Eric Duncan flew through Brussels to get to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport - but no airlines operate a direct flight from the European capital to Dallas, meaning he had to take a connecting flight in between.

U.S. officials have refused to release details of his itinerary, including which city he connected through - claiming that none of his fellow passengers are at risk.

Several leading U.S. airlines said on Wednesday they were in close contact with federal health officials about Ebola-related travel.

Airlines for America, the industry trade group, on Wednesday U.S. airlines are in regular contact with the Centers for Disease Control and other government agencies about helping to prevent the spread of Ebola.

The CDC chief’s press conference yesterday left me with more questions than answers. He was evasive, and quite frankly, not at all believable!

He can’t have one without the other. If he wants treatment here, he risks infecting an entire continent. Selfish a-hole. If he survives he should be fined, and sent back to Liberia with no chance of coming back here.

Jesus H. Christ. This is the biggest bunch of jerks that I have ever come across. If I had been exposed to ebola and knew that I would probably die in Liberia if I didn’t get my ASYMPTOMATIC self back to the US, you bet your ass I would come back. I would then immediately go to a hospital

LOL!

Two days after he was sent home from a Dallas hospital, the man who is the first person to be diagnosed with Ebola in the United States was seen vomiting on the ground outside an apartment complex as he was bundled into an ambulance. “His whole family was screaming. He got outside and he was throwing up all over the place

They will need to burn the plane and all those infected....

“how did he already infect his family member”

I read elsewhere that he rode in the taxi with the woman that died on Sept 15. The first time he went to the hospital was Sept 24, so its nine days to the severe symptoms. He arrived in Dallas on the Sept 20, so his family should be showing the symptoms about now.

I was just watching Dr Oz and he was saying the virus has mutated 50 times and was worried it could become air born.

Maybe the guy has a more virulent strain.

Absolutely...it's moronic mumbling.

With a 17-hour flight, a person could be fine when they got on board and still infect a lot of people before they get off.

Exactly so. Hasn't every one of us had the experience? One starts out well - for a day at work, or a trip somewhere - then after a few hours feeling very ill with a severe flu, or other virus. In fact, we had that illness for some time, the symptoms appear suddenly when it has passed a certain stage.

UAL not the best maintenance and not very clean aircraft. No these airplane's are still in service and have not been deep cleaned in years. Deep clean at UAL is parked in Arizona at the airplane grave yard. A few years in the sun and then made into clean beer cans.

I sleep so well knowing that people like this consider themselves ‘principled conservatives’. I mean I’m pretty open about not caring a whit about libs darwining themselves, but I actually do want good people to continue breathing.

I guess others don’t. And for the record, I’ll say with 100% certainty that if I get ebola, I’ll walk out my back door into the desert rather than endanger ANYONE.

Airplanes have all recirculated air that he was breathing, maybe sneezing and coughing in and not saying a word...

The air is not recirculated in the sense that what is in the plane stays in the plane. It is constantly refreshed and changes completely in about a minute. The air from the compression stages of the engines is run thru heat exchanging and filtering elements before it is infused into the aircraft thus pressurising it. At the same time air is exhausted into the atmosphere thru a valve/door to maintain the desired cabin altitude. Next time you have a chance look at the outside near the tail of your airplane around the rear doors and you will see a large opening about the size of an aircraft window partially closed by a door. That is the door that when closed allows the a/c to pressurize. In flight it modulates, ever so slightly to keep the cabin altitude steady. If there were to be a rapid depressurization that door would slam shut in an attempt to stop the pressure loss. Outside air, heated and cooled constantly moves through the cabin. It is not a closed system.

And another darn good reason why all flights should have been severely restricted from Africa and or from anyone who originated from that continent...

Otherwise, we’re going to have thousands flying in on sealed tubes with wings into hometown USA, trying to save their own asses while putting millions of others at risk.

Fact about Ebola Virus infographic

Facts About Ebola (Infographic) [PDF - 1 page]

Because the natural reservoir host of Ebola viruses has not yet been identified, the manner in which the virus first appears in a human at the start of an outbreak is unknown. However, researchers believe that the first patient becomes infected through contact with an infected animal.

When an infection does occur in humans, the virus can be spread in several ways to others. Ebola is spread through direct contact (through broken skin or mucous membranes) with

blood or body fluids (including but not limited to urine, saliva, feces, vomit, and semen) of a person who is sick with Ebola
objects (like needles and syringes) that have been contaminated with the virus
infected animals
Ebola is not spread through the air or by water, or in general, food. However, in Africa, Ebola may be spread as a result of handling bushmeat (wild animals hunted for food) and contact with infected bats.

“Reporting this SOB Duncan was carrying around infected dying Ebola patients days prior to boarding the flight.”

First, I don’t know what you mean. He was carrying dead people? Or dying? Must’ve been tired after all that.

Second, why the meanness? SOB? Is that really necessary? Just because he happened to pick up an illness? Have a bit of compassion, and a bit less consiratorial attitude. My God, the man is sick himself!

I’ve been a sick pup all my life so I have had lots of time to think about issues of mortality. I cannot imagine how anyone can want to save their tail so badly they are willing to kill others to do it. I just don’t.

And no one here can argue that they do not know what ebola is of generally how it works. That makes it all the more mindblowing. Ebola is about the worst death there is.

He was showing no symptoms until 4 days after he landed.

If, after carrying a woman who was dying from Ebola, he didn't know he was exposed....he's a bleepin' idiot!

This is insane and absolutely being allowed to happen...It’s clearly intentional.

It’s like they’re using us as test guinea pigs or lab rats..

Does anyone know how many Libyans have entered this country in the past year?

How do we know that others haven’t infected more people in the last few weeks?
