Marine Phoenix identified as ship from Africa with sick crew
NEW ORLEANS In a statement released late Wednesday night, the Centers for Disease Control stressed that crew members on a freighter inbound to New Orleans were suffering from malaria and show no traces of Ebola.
Official confirms 1 person aboard African ship has malaria.
A crew member who fell ill on a ship from Africa is diagnosed with malaria, an official says.
First responders who took those individuals to the hospital wore protective garb as a precaution, though health officials noted early on that it was extremely unlikely that Ebola was to blame for the sickness on the Marine Phoenix.
The ship remained at anchor in the Mississippi River near Belle Chasse. It was expected to continue its voyage to New Orleans early on Thursday.

Eeeee-bolllll-aaaaaa ping!
Bring Out Your Dead
Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
I chuckled when I read this : "Official confirms 1 person aboard African ship has malaria. "
I thought that's fine, now, how many have Ebola, lol.
anybody trust ANYTHING coming out obammy’s gub mint?
Lying pos
Uh huh! How about all onboard who were exposed to ‘whatever’ the sickness is? Sure- let’s let third world, disease ridden people out into the streets of tropical New Orleans; let’em party with the locals-mix right in! My nephew is N.O. EMS and I’ll ask him if he went on this call and-if so- what the real word is from them-vs-what is being reported. All I can say is ‘Ellis Island’- it worked for keeping disease ridden foreigners out back then, why not use the same policy now?
Yesterday I was wondering if the ship was named NARCISSUS.
Subtle reference to a Joseph Conrad novel.

That or “exceedingly low”

Probably not. This ship should and all others from the region should be quarantined for 30 days before allowing anyone to disembark.
Just as an abundance of caution of course.
Ellis Island. Absolutely-set up a hot zone medical area, and quarantine area on an island. Mandatory 30 day quarantine such international travelers.
Thanks for the ping!
