Los Angeles (CNN) -- "Django Unchained" actress Daniele Watts defended her refusal to show her ID to Los Angeles police before they handcuffed her last week.
The African-American actress and her white boyfriend accused police of racism for questioning them in what they said was only a public display of affection.
"I believe in America and what it stands for," Watts said Monday in an interview on CNN's "New Day."
Police responded to a citizen complaint that "a male white and female black were involved in a sexual act inside a Mercedes" outside the gate of CBS Studio Center on Thursday, according to a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Police Department.

Sex in public is still a a crime in the great state of California, all be it a misdemeanor, and a pretty much hysterically funny one at that.
Ms Watts was not just refusing to provide I.D., she was copping an attitude and escalating a pretty minor situation that could have been dealt with quietly and discretely with the officers involved into a very public scene of resisting arrest.
Life should not be tough for movie stars , but some choose to make their lives rough because they are stupid and arrogant

“I believe in America and what it stands for,” Watts said.
She’s got a point.
Exactly. The camera came back to her with her hand on her chest and taking deep breaths, and I cracked up.
Then she goes into a rant about how much respect she has for our nation and everyone’s rights.
Ah, do other adults have a right not to witness her and her husband doing the nasty in public?
Does she want others to do the nasty in public?
How would she like to come back to her car parked anywhere, and have two adults going at it in each car on either side of her?
You know folks, I’ve never been afraid to show my ID to a police officer. I don’t live a life where there might be something he would spot, if he knew it was me.
She acts as if she were defending the freedom of every black by her actions here. So what, only whites have to show their IDs then?
Man some blacks sure have an inflated opinion of themselves. Strangely enough, the rest of us only see them as other human beings. Perhaps by the end of the 21st Century, they will too. Not holding my breath...
She had no legal obligation to provide an ID, so why should she?
Bailiff,bring in the next defendant!
Public sex is still unlawful. Obviously the cop was not a fan of hers so he didn’t know she was just a regular actress slut that people watch on TV.
Public sex is only legal in California if it’s two dudes in a public park frequented by lots of children in which case it is encouraged
There was an incident recently at Logan Airport (Boston) involving a Massachusetts state judge. She was clearly seen on a security camera stealing a $4,000 watch at TSA security. Some time later,a State cop found her reading a newspaper in an airline First Class lounge, approached her and asked for her ID.She presented both her license *and* her official ID issued by the state's court system. It didn't work,to the cop's credit she was charged anyway.
Cop (in calm, passive aggressive voice): I do have more power than you.
Mr. Four Feet Eleven enjoys his power.
She’s guilty
Her and the boyfriend were committing an illegal act in public in a public location. The only reason the cop handcuffed her was after she refused to show ID, the boyfriend did. Now showing ID gave police the suspicion that she may be a prostitute. Again, they didn’t think she was one UNTIL she refused to show ID.
The police would have let them go scot free if she had just shown ID. In my opinion, the couple planned this as a publicity stunt. Apparently this is all the rage now with celebrities.
I would have showed my ID as I was explaining to he cop that my rights were being violated and that I'd sue. When the dust had settled I would have consulted a lawyer and offered him/her half of anything that a court awarded me in damages. If the lawyer accepted the offer I would have known that I was probably right to protest.
“Django Unchained” actress Daniele Watts...
Does that really count as an actress?
Thank you.
Did she try the old “Don’t you know who I am?!?” bit?
The laws on that vary from state to state. I believe California used to have a law requiring you to identify yourself, but the courts struck it down.
She was embarrassed having been caught and didn’t want to have her name exposed... (until she realized this could be a career maker and a possible adopted member of the Kardashion family).
Maybe it was her boyfriend who pulled out of the race card.
“Public sex is still unlawful.”
Isn’t that part of the thrill, though?
Good point. Perhaps she was arrested for hetero-sex.
