'Star-Spangled Banner': Anthem was once a song of drinking and sex

Key was on a British ship, part of a U.S. delegation to negotiate a prisoner release. He was kept on board to prevent the American forces from being tipped off about the forthcoming bombing by the British.

He was allowed to return to Baltimore on Sept. 14 and was so inspired by the U.S. pluckiness that he wrote a poem, "Defence of Fort M'Henry," which he published on Sept. 20, 1814.

~snip~

Neither Key's early hymn nor the Barbary War is widely taught in American schools anymore (except for the reference in the Marines’ Hymn: “To the shores of Tripoli”).

***Anthem was once a song of drinking and sex****

So? When the SALVATION ARMY first started they were criticized for using the bawdy street songs, with new words.

Their reply was...”Why should the devil have all the best tunes?”

Old news.

Besides, the Left is only against drinking and sex when they have a narrative they need to support.

Francis Scott Key was there to negotiate prisoner release. And Barry O was there to peel the fig leaf off the Orpheus at Fort McHenry statue.

Thanks for your comment. I took a brief patriotic break from the discussion to watch the swimsuit competition in the Miss America Pageant (Miss Florida’s my fave, she’s gorgeous).

It was the song for an amateur musicians group in Britain. And of course Francis Scott Key’s work was not about drinking and sex. The tune to the old song was the source for the adapted version for the music to go along with Key’s work to make it into a song. The original does not sound like an anthem as does the Star Spangled Banner and is quite easy to distinguish between them without any words. This article is fairly absurd.

I posted a thread like that once just to get people thinking about the ‘Star Spangled Banner’. It worked. People ‘bit my head off’, and I’m glad.

We need more pro-military in the US, unapologetic celebration of our fighting spirit. Without it, we will curl up and die.

While we also need God, the religious professionals are well funded compared to pro-military. It’s not the military’s fault that religious professionals aren’t doing a good enough job. Religious leaders’ brains are contorted by college professors. And until that is remedied, our churches are poisoned by the ‘wicked scribe’ problem Jesus warned about.

It was a song for a drinking society. Since the Star Spangled Banner is featured, I am one of the few people on you tube who sang all four stanzas of our national anthem (the defense of ft. McHenry).

Bravo! Very well said.

And if you need another reason, go to you tube and search for "Italian War Songs". Great music to dance by, poor music to kick a$$ by.

Not just the words, but the tune and tempo also have to inspire.

“When we got to the “alabaster” line in the song, we would sing, “Thy ala-BASTARD cities gleam...””

That for which you sang has come to pass. And the electorate even voted one into the White Mosque, twice.
