Diversity dearth: Army data reveal lack of black leadership in key commands

The U.S. Army launched a new recruiting video at the All-American Bowl -- it's largest recruiting event -- aimed at piquing the interests of minority recruits into joining the Army's officer corps.

New Marine Corps ads target women, minorities to join as officers

The Marine Corps has launched a multimedia advertising campaign aimed at encouraging more women and minorities to join as officers and ending a decades-old stereotype that the Corps is the domain of white men.

Black military leaders express pride, not surprise, at progress

STUTTGART, Germany — Anthony Jackson recalls the encounter like it was yesterday.

WASHINGTON — Command of the Army's combat battalions and brigades — its pipeline to top leadership — is virtually devoid of black officers, according to interviews, documents and data obtained by USA Today.

The lack of black officers who lead infantry, armor and field artillery battalions and brigades — there are no black colonels at the brigade level this year — threatens the Army's effectiveness, disconnects it from American society and deprives black officers of the principal route to top Army posts, according to officers and military sociologists. Fewer than 10 percent of the active-duty Army's officers are black compared with 18 percent of its enlisted men, according to the Army.

The problem is most acute in its main combat units: infantry, armor and artillery. In 2014, there was not a single black colonel among those 25 brigades, the Army's main fighting unit of about 4,000 soldiers. Brigades consist of three to four battalions of 800 to 1,000 soldiers led by lieutenant colonels. Just one of those 78 battalions is scheduled to be led by a black officer in 2015.

Times must have changed. When I was in 108th ADA Group in Germany, our Group Cdr from 78-80 was Johnie Forte, Jr., a black Colonel. From there, he would go on to BG.

He was a great leader, and it was an honor to serve with him.

There were other fine officers that I served with, many of whom were black. My best efficiency reports came from black supervisors.

What the heck has happened over the past 30 years?

While serving in the Naval Reserve, I found that blacks that served were educated, patriotic and in most cases conservative. There were exceptions, bear in mind this has been about 15 years ago. I recall we had one black officer that was very sharp, but a flaming lib. Skin color was the least consideration for promotion. Today the bar has to be lowered and that is not good.

There is also a lack of red heads, midgets and paraplegics in leadership positions, so what?

They need more LesbianThespianGymnasticMidgets...

According to John Derbyshire, ten percent of whites have an IQ of 80 or below. Forty percent of blacks have an IQ of 80 or below.

Therefore...

There is one type of “Affirmative Action” that none of its advocates talk about much less have experienced.

True “Affirmative Action” can only be found on the battlefield in the middle of a heavy fire fight - bullets, incoming, mines, and fragmentation don’t care what your gender or race are. They will kill the minorities just as fast as they will kill the majorities.

Been there and done that.

If I was ‘King for the day” I would make promotion solely dependent on the number of combat tours you have accomplished. After all, how do you know what is truly important in combat if you haven’t been there, ever!

When people complain about all the Blacks in the NBA, the typical response is that blacks are better basketball players. Yet when Blacks are “underrepresented” in some field (based on their percentage of the population), there is always a cry of racism. The Blacks live in a dreamworld where it should always be a win-win situation (for themselves) for getting a piece of the pie - whether they deserve it or not. The Blacks think that 13% of Mensa should be Black.

The Blacks didn’t even fight for their freedom. White people fought white people to free the slaves. If it wasn’t for the whites in the north, there would still be slavery in the south.

Back when I was a Lieutenant in '77, I made the idiotic mistake of engaging in a discussion about leadership with two fellow lieutenants who were black. The discussion was about why so few black candidates made it through OCS successfully and I forwarded the theory that leadership wasn't fostered in the black community - that it a "every man for himself" environment and that there were few fathers to give a guide for leadership.

My supposed friends went apocalyptic on me, screaming (literally - in the middle of the Commissioned Officer's Mess)that I was a racist and went directly to my commanding officer with the charge. The only thing that saved me and my career was another black officer who went to the colonel and vouched for me - and the colonel had a fast-fill billet to lead a shooting team and I was sent there and out of the way.

Believe me, I never discussed anything at all about race again with any of my fellow officers. I did look for officer potential among all of my troops and got commissioning programs for as many as I was able - but honest discussion is never possible.

I only met one black officer that deserved his accolades. His name was Daniel James. He didn't have a chip on his shoulder and was as down to Earth as any. Most of the others that I served with were affirmative action selectees and were intolerable with which to be around. The idiocy even extended into the enlisted ranks where blacks were promoted over qualified whites just because of the color. We saw the results during the Carter Administration. There was a saying, Cream rises to the top but so does feces.

Turning the US military into another disfunctional liberal social experiment one Affirmative Action promotion at a time.

Diversity is simply a tool to justify hiring/promoting less competent minorities and women instead of white men.

The lack of black officers who lead infantry, armor and field artillery battalions and brigades.. threatens the Army's effectiveness..

So how effective were the armies of the Caesar's, or Alexander, or the Khan's in the building of empires? What exactly was the composite ratios of race in those officer positions?

Do the British, German, Dutch and Spanish attribute their war-filled expansion and colonial conquests to the 20% Black Officer corps embedded in their Armies and Navies?

And as a counterpoint, and not one that is logical but merely used to confute the main article's irrational premise, with the infusion of Affirmative Action, what has been the record of U.S. Military lasting success in Korea, Viet Nam, Somalia, Afghanistan, and Iraq?

Pursuing a further PC commitment to radical social engineering of the military is national suicide.

It seems inevitable that whites who spend lots of time with blacks will eventually be called racist.

What the heck has happened over the past 30 years?

Merit is the only criterion that should dictate Officer promotion and retention. As such, men of any color should be afforded and rewarded positions according to the merit of their behavior. For the last 30 years, merit alone has been too slow, for the Progressives, in filling the ranks of any worthy institution with their preferred victim class members.

- but honest discussion is never possible.

The truth is not always pretty, comfortable or what we desire.

The truth here is quite ugly and will never be honestly discussed in polite company. This topic can only be discussed honestly in private with trusted friends.

If it wasn’t for the whites in the north, there would still be slavery in the south.

I understand the premise, and sympathize with the loss of life and treasure during the War of Northern Aggression, but in truth, slavery was only going to last another 30 or so years. All around the world, the civilized countries (Russia, China, Brazil, Argentina, etc.) had abandoned slavery as inefficient and/or immoral. Of course, the Muslim countries continue to practice slavery to this day..

Are blacks the only ethnic group in the United States? How many Koreans are in positions of leadership? Chinese Americans... To hell with defending the country... let’s play numbers.
