Rep. Charlie Dent (R-Pa.) on Thursday characterized Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) as being deliberately confrontational before abruptly walking off the stage at an event meant to raise awareness for Christians in the Middle East.
Cruz said some in the crowd the night before reacted with "bigotry and hatred" when he expressed his support for Israel early in his speech.
"I support Israel, but what Senator Cruz did was outrageous and incendiary," Dent told The Washington Post. "He showed a true lack of sensitivity for the people he was speaking to, especially the religious leaders who were there. It was a political speech, inappropriate and, overall, an uncomfortable moment." Dent attended the event sponsored by the group In Defense of Christians. He said Cruz seemed to be speaking to another audience, speculating it might have been done to rally Tea Party activists. The group is aimed at advocating for Christians persecuted in the Middle East.
He was speaking to people outside of the building," Dent said. "It was a willful and deliberate confrontation, and very self-serving."
Cruz cut his remarks short after only a few minutes. In a statement issued near midnight, Cruz said he had been booed while expressing his strong support for Israel and the Jewish people.
I told the attendees that those who hate Israel also hate America, that those who hate Jews also hate Christians, and that anyone who hates Israel and the Jewish people is not following the teachings of Christ," Cruz said. These statements were met with angry boos."
The Texas Republican then walked out after telling the audience he would not stand with them if they did not stand with the Jewish people.

To the GOP:
Go play in traffic.
Was there reason to be proud of being American prior to Israel?
Israel is going to fall one day, just like everything else that’s man-made — including the United States, Russia, China, and all the rest. If you are not in Christ, you have no permanent future to speak of.
It would be best to give up idols sooner rather than later.
Some say history is but prologue.
Never so much as when we, in the modern era, recognized our Judeo-Christian roots by recognizing Israel.
When Jesus taught his disciples to pray, He taught them a Hebrew prayer.
My Grandfather was very American when he stormed the Beaches in the Pacific prior to the current State of Israel. I support Israel for reasons that I find to be self evident, but I certainly do not agree that being a Patriot is linked to support for any foreign country.
Dent is probably another anti-Semite.
Thank you Senator CRUZ! May God be with You in your endeavors in the Senate for America's faith and nation, in Jesus name, amen.
JANE, thanks for the number!
Dial Dent if you dare CAIR.
Charlie Dent is dead to me. Cruz has my vote and Dent can go to hell.
Cruz did nothing wrong. It is you who is wrong - at least on this issue. I predict that this will increase his popularity.
You betcha!
I guess my call must’ve completely floored his staffer.
I politely said Rep Dent certainly doesn’t follow Reagan’s 11th commandment, about NOT attacking each other within our party. Dims don’t do it. And, that what Dent said about Cruz was “outrageous”....that I salute Sen Cruz for standing up for Israel.
I also said Dent is the perfect example of an establishment RINO...and, that maybe he should run as a Dim, in the future.
She was speechless.
I agree, ohioman.
I stand with Ted Cruz.
Shut up, RINO.
Great, great point about Reagan not speaking ill of another Republican, but BEST of all, your point about Dems NEVER do it. And, the Dems are unabashed purists.
Republicans are not allowed to be purists. The Establishment and their voter props say so. Even some FReepers.
Republicans ignore their own national platform, eat conservatives and spend big doing it, so Dems won’t have to.
This is not okay. Great phone call, Jane.
Spot on, m’Lady.
There are Conservatives... ... and then there are republicans.
Stuff it, Dent.
IMHO, we write off Israel and we write off ourselves. We would never again be able to invoke God as to any aspect of our National purpose.
And we were hopeless heathens prior to Israel then by your logic?
