U.S. Army sociologists are worried that a lack of black officers leading its combat troops will have detrimental effect on minorities and lead to fewer black officers in top leadership posts.
“The issue exists. The leadership is aware of it,” Brig. Gen. Ronald Lewis told USA Today on Thursday. “The leadership does have an action plan in place. And it’s complicated.”
The Army reports that only 10 percent of its active-duty officers are black, which has contributed to its dearth of black officers leading soldiers with occupational specialties in infantry, armor and artillery.
“It certainly is a problem for several reasons,” Col. Irving Smith, director of sociology at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, told USA Today. “First we are a public institution. And as a public institution we certainly have more of a responsibility to our nation than a private company to reflect it...

About 10% of the US population is black so it sounds about right to me.
I find this shocking since I read where the military had the largest number of Black middle managers.

"Only"? If it's more than 12%, they're going to be screaming that they're over-represented and that the wars will be won on the back of Guess Who. That claim was already made with regard to Vietnam - it was entirely fictitious but you still hear it now and then.
My problem is with "Army sociologists". It could be easily solved by running the lot of them across a minefield or two to clear it. Presumably the casualties would be equally distributed racially and everyone would be happy.
Good to know that our Armed Forces are run by a bunch of racist sexualists.

But, that aside I agree. It isn't fair that white people get to lead combat units and make up almost 90% of the Marine Corps infantry.
It really leads to racial disparity in the award system. Why, there are military awards that white males receive more than all other races combined. And I think minorities in the military should be forced into the infantry so they get the opportunities to earn that award, the Purple Heart - the same as I had the opportunity in the grunts and earned mine.

And only semi-sarcasm because part of me says - take it to the natural end. Sometimes with petulant children you have to just let them have their way.
Eventually they'll learn the stove is hot and eating too many cookies will give you a tummy ache. And, that bullets and shrapnel f'n hurt.
Seems to me that whites have borne the brunt of the casualties in this war, too. Need to even that up.
Nothing like a few more Colin Powell’s who, when given a choice between a fellow Vietnam vet and a guy from the opposing party, supported the opposing party guy because he was “black”. I sure wouldn’t want to serve under a guy like that—what happens if the enemy is “black”? How can you trust a commander who is racist?
I think that surgeons and engineers should be selected according to racial quotas. Yeah, great idea!
