Most of My David Allen Coe collection is absolutely un-postable, even by my standards.

ROCKUMENTARY: SEPTEMBER 6, 1967

Cue the Rockumentary theme!

San Remo Golden Strings: “Festival Time”

#5 – The Box Tops: “The Letter”

When I told the story of the Fathers of Hot Country, I spent a bit of time on the early work of producer Lincoln “Chips” Moman, who discovered Alex Chilton, a 16 year old who sounded like an old black blues singer. Moman later went on to salvage the career of Elvis Presley.

I also went into the songbook of Wayne Carson, one of the habitues of Wally’s Nightclub in Nashville, home of the early songwriters of Hot Country because of its cheap beer. This song brought Moman, Carson and Chilton together for the first time.

Had Chilton followed Moman’s advice and not been so pigheaded, he could have been the great pioneer of Hot Country. Instead, material intended for Chilton ended up being sung by Elvis, who started the genre. Later in his career, Chilton embraced a kind of Hot Country sound, but it was too late. He had no business sense and treated his fans like dirt.

ROCKUMENTARY: SEPTEMBER 6, 1967

#4 – Aretha Franklin: “Baby I Love You”

She’s one of the greatest pianists in the business, and she spent years at Columbia going nowhere because the label didn’t know what to do with her. She teamed up with producer Jerry Wexler at Ahmet Ertegun’s Atlantic Records, and the rest is history.
