Rates of adult obesity increased in six U.S. states and fell in none last year, and in more states than ever - 20 - at least 30 percent of adults are obese, according to an analysis released on Thursday.
The conclusions were reported by the Trust for America's Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and were based on federal government data. They suggest the problem may be worsening despite widespread publicity about the nation's obesity epidemic, from First Lady Michelle Obama and many others, plus countless programs to address it.
From 2011 to 2012, by comparison, the rate of obesity increased in only one state.
The 2013 adult obesity rate exceeds 20 percent in every state, while 42 have rates above 25 percent. For the first time two states, Mississippi and West Virginia, rose above 35 percent. The year before, 13 states were above 30 percent and 41 had rates of at least 25 percent.

I read that yesterday and thought of the absurdity of the statement.
First how are weight standards developed arbitrarily or mathematically?
If the standards are arbitrary then what is the standard? A German businessman, an American geek, a Saudi prince or a Somali pirate?
If developed mathematically, then averages would be developed compared to height and/or waistline. If 30% of the people in the world don't meet that calculated number then it is time to recalculate because the standard has become outdated.
Active lifestyle while enjoying the facts and protein. Don't consume vast amounts of sugar and processed food, and bread. Get outside and do work.
It is no more possible to eat fewer calories than you burn and not lose weight than it is to let go of an item and not have it fall to earth.
the timing and content of consumption can make a difference, by physics is physics.
How convenient that when the PTB has demonized real food, the corporate cronies have produced a frankenfood substitute.
"We're from the government and we're here to [blank] you."
History teaches that
War on Poverty = poverty
War on Drugs = drugs
War on Obesity = obesity
And the Patriot Act and TSA were only the beginning terrors in the War on Terror. We haven't seen the full fruit of that one yet, but Barak is hastening the ripening of it at "lightning" speed.
Really? What about the "we" who say, "I'll pass on all the carbs and eat smart instead"?
Obese people are obese because of bad eating choices. No one is forcing them to make those choices.
Man o manischevitz, you are so right!! My wise ol' ma told me recently to stop drinking non-fat milk and go back to fat milk because "your body needs the fat to metabolize everything else properly." This was a few months ago and already I have DROPPED weight by switching from non-fat to 2 percent milk (haven't yet worked up to whole milk, which I used to love but which now is almost too much for my taste buds!).
Fat people who try to put responsibility for their state of obesity on someone or something else, are refusing to accept responsibility for their own actions and choices.
It’s pretty much people thinking that since the treadmill says they burned 500 calories that they can eat 400 and still lose weight; their basal metabolism might mean they only burned 300. Physically impossible to burn more calories than you consume without losing weight, indeed if you aren’t losing weight it’s pretty solid evidence you are either eating more calories than you think or burning fewer than you think. Every case of someone “eating less than they burn” is either error in their measurements or the retention of more water. I mean for a week or two, yeah, I could eat only 1000 calories and do my normal 3 miles and 45 minutes of weight lifting but carb up, retain 8 or 10 extra pounds of water and weigh more, but not over time or with any accurate measurement that takes into account hydration and accurate amounts of food and exercise; the readouts on a gym treadmill and the information on a package of food don’t count.
I don’t have any numbers to substantiate this, but I wonder if obesity is increasing in direct proportion to the growing number of welfare recipients?
I think if you split out the people who are temporarily on welfare and just trying to get back on their feet from people for whom it their entire life you would find it so.
Bad choices in both cases. Bad choices regarding food make it very very easy to get fat, most particularly when the options regarding high quality (expensive) protein and good, fresh vegetables are limited
Calories are excreted. Measure those and you would have a point. The best indicator of excreted calories is speed of digestion. A couple hours of digestion will keep the calories moving. Some Americans diets cause multiple day digestion.
Lifestyles and jobs are a lot more automated and less “hands on” nowadays.
We’re a generation of gluttons nevertheless.....
“Eat fewer calories than you burn, you *WILL* lose weight, “
So how is this not so? If you eat 1000 calories and burn 1100, you won’t lose weight? I think you owe Red an apology.
Yep, exercise and avoid the excess carbs. It is not really that complicated.
One problem is that your metabolism changes when your body thinks it is being starved. Another issue is that different types of food require different processes to metabolize. If you wish to develop a better understanding of the topic, I recommend the book I linked above.
Does your reading repeal the first law of thermodynamics? I think it is you who needs to read more.
Our nations overweight problems are linked to our increased consumption of convenience foods and other foods that are high in carbohydrate counts.
Our nation is overweight because we're consuming more energy than we burn. It has a lot to do with a sedentary lifestyle. Sitting around eating crap while playing video games results in a much different outcome than running around outside until you are forced to come home and eat dinner.
As a nation, we consumed huge quantities of carbohydrates a few generations ago, yet obesity was rare. That's because we worked like hell and burned it off. Our genes haven't changed, but our lifestyle has. Focusing on the source of the calories is just another distraction brought to you by people with an agenda that involves politics or taking your money. Same as it ever was.
From the article:
“Obesity also tracked demographics, with higher rates correlating with poverty”
“One-third of adults who earn less than $15,000 per year are obese, compared with one-quarter who earn at least $50,000”

It is well known that people receiving public assistance have much higher rates of obesity than people who do not.
Sounds like the number of handi-capped spots needs to be doubled. $180 fines here.
SouthPark did a episode satirizing obesely fat people riding around on scooters with handi-capped passes which sadly and entertainingly mirrored real life. Like many episodes it was hilarious.
he's a great writer who happens to have learned how to leverage fad diets into an incredible fortune. He just another charlatan getting rich on the scientific illiteracy of the public.
How does this reconcile with the purported 17 million children going hungry everyday? /s
But I’m constantly hearing from the lib press that 1 in 6 people in the US are facing hunger.
