Krebs On Security ^ | September 2, 2014 | Brian Krebs

Multiple banks say they are seeing evidence that Home Depot stores may be the source of a massive new batch of stolen credit and debit cards that went on sale this morning in the cybercrime underground. Home Depot says that it is working with banks and law enforcement agencies to investigate reports of suspicious activity.

>>I can’t help it if YOU don’t like what works for MY family...

If you were capable of reading comprehension, you would have seen that we use DC’s for small transactions, CC for large. Or was that an “inconvenient” part of the reply?<<

Hey I am glad it works for you. If think you are protected, more power to you.

It may not be true but if it works for you then it works for you.

I don’t understand the online banking thing. I haven’t seen a bank teller (except to make my final mortgage payment) in 10 years. But if you like going to banks and standing in lines and stuff, I am not going to suggest you are wrong.

My wife balances our bank accounts everyday. Probably the best guardian against problems. But she tracks on physical green ledger books so everyone has their own pain points.

>>I only barter for anything I purchase and always keep a large supply of chickens, bags of grain, blankets, furs, silk and perfume on me at all times.<<

Don’t forget cigarettes and chocolate.

And booze — lots of booze.

This I don't understand...numerous times for years we hear of hacking of bank accounts through on-line weaknesses.

Yet, here we are discussing the merits of DC's vs. CC's and how "secure" one is over the other...

My wife goes to the CU every Friday and uses counter checks to pay the bills...yeah, she may sit there for 30 minutes or so and pay postage to mail the bills, but the risk is near 0 and she rather enjoys socializing with her friends at the Branch while doing so.

To each their own I suppose.

Name one.

I have not heard of a direct backdoor hack attack on a bank account in... ever.

I haven't set foot in a banking lobby in years. The most recent time was to get a cashier's check to buy a new car. The time before that was to pay off a mortgage. I printed off the details from the mortgage company's web site, told the nice lady in the lobby that I needed a wire transfer and gave her the printout. She disappeared in the back room for a couple of minutes, then returned and told me I was all set.

The only checks I write are to the US Treasury. I use ACHs for the state.

Everything else is via the Bank of America online bill paying site. All my payees are pre-entered. I just fill in the amounts and select the pay-by date on the pop-up calendar. They have a neat page that shows the pending and recently processed payments. No scribbling on checks. No licking stamps. I've been using that service for about ten years without a problem.

Home Depot allows PayPal accounts for transactions.

I’ve been using that since early in the year.

I just got an automated call from what I am to believe is my credit card company. They stated the last 4 digits of the card. They allowed ‘Home Depot’ to remain nameless in the recording as they told me to expect a new card in the mail and that my old card would stop working after Sept 23rd. They did not ask for me to do anything from the call.

Just why should the merchant get a free ride.

THIS IS THE BIGGEST PAIN IN THE ARSE. I have mutliple parties I pay by credit card debit and this is the third time in 12 months this has happened to me.
