Hunger and panic are spreading among people unable to work because of restrictions aimed at containing the spread of Ebola in Liberia and Sierra Leone, say church workers in West Africa.
In Liberias capital, Monrovia, church groups are trying to get food and distribute it to families who have asked us to help, but movement is heavily restricted and there is little we can do, Salesian Father Jorge Crisafulli, provincial superior in West Africa, said in an Aug. 22 telephone interview from Accra, Ghana.
Neighborhoods in Monrovia have been sealed off under terms of the government-imposed state of emergency.
The World Health Organization has estimated that more than 2,600 people in West Africa have been infected with Ebola since March. More than 1,400 people have died from the virus.
Food prices in Liberia are rising steeply and people are hungry, Father Crisafulli said, noting that markets in the city that are usually bustling are now empty and no trading is happening.
People are unable to get to work and, while they still have to buy food, they have no money because they cant work, he said.
There is great fear of spread of disease where there are large groups of people, he said.
Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea are the countries mainly affected by the current Ebola outbreak.
Particularly in Liberia, Ebola has become an economic and social problem as well as a health problem, Father Crisafulli said, noting that panic and fear are now greater problems than the disease itself.

Anyone who isn’t concerned about Ebola should read “The Hot Zone” - nonfiction by Richard Preston.
Read it online for free here:
http://learn.flvs.net/educator/common/EnglishIIv10/TheHotZone.pdf
Here is the Amazon summary:
The bestselling landmark account of the first emergence of the Ebola virus. A highly infectious, deadly virus from the central African rain forest suddenly appears in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. There is no cure. In a few days 90 percent of its victims are dead. A secret military SWAT team of soldiers and scientists is mobilized to stop the outbreak of this exotic “hot” virus. The Hot Zone tells this dramatic story, giving a hair-raising account of the appearance of rare and lethal viruses and their “crashes” into the human race.
Shocking, frightening, and impossible to ignore, The Hot Zone proves that truth really is scarier than fiction.
Looks like humblegunner may be right after all. Or maybe I am. I don’t know for sure, but it’s a very interesting piece of info. Could apply to either scenario, but I have to admit that her title would seem to support humblegunner’s theory more than mine.
And I have to admit that I never knew what the heck a Social Media Specialist did until Gunner caught her in the act.
Bring Out Your Dead
Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
Any idea when the quarantine started?
Just one more reason to have at least a year’s supply of food stashed, and unknown to others, as well as the security to keep it.
A link to this thread has been posted on the Ebola Surveillance Thread
HOT ZONE is great.
Also check out Albert Camus’ THE PLAGUE.
Sheesh!
Oh no, it was not name calling. It is an assessment of your role in life.
You are the liquid one uses to clean out stinky private parts. That is your function.
No one really wants you around, and when you are around, people just want to see your vile filth go into the sewer where you belong.
Did YOU ever stop to wonder maybe the dude/gal IS Cathlic and that’s where they get their news?
Jesus humblegunner, take a chill pill dude.
I had paragraphs in my post - don’t know what happened.
Thanks for the ping!
You’re Welcome, Alamo-Girl!
Brilliant!
The hunger needs to be dealt with or people will flee the quarantined areas spreading the disease as they go.
Hey, Thanx!!! I have an ebook library hold for the “Hot Zone” but so many ahead of me that it will probably be months before I have access to it but thanx to your link I can read it now.
The original poster goes by the user name Welchie25 and is apparentlyEmma Welcher, a "Social Media Specialist" for The Catholic Review, which is the official newspaper of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Baltimore. Welchie25 only posts articles from that web site, and appears never to respond to her own articles or the comments people post about them.
However, she (assuming Welchie25 is really Emma Welcher, and assuming Emma is a woman - you can't be sure these days) does not simply post links to The Catholic Review website. Rather, she seems to post enough of the article to understand what it's conclusions are. Therefore, you only need to go to The Catholic Review's website if you want to read the whole article.
I'm not aware that this breaks any forum rules. If it does, then she should be suspended or banned, accordingly.
However, it DOES beg the question whether this is in the spirit of Free Republic. I guess the answer to this question can only really be given by Jim Robinson. What would be the reaction if a "Social Media Specialist" from The New York Times or The Washington Post or Time Magazine did the same - that is, if they posted the meat of the article directly on Free Republic and provided the link to the full article for those who were interested, and then never participated in the discussion. I'm not sure that would be an "acceptable use."
I don't think there is any hard and fast rule about such things, and my goal has never been to get anyone banned.
The fact is we've got a paid pimp here, using FR as a free advertising platform.
This Welchie pimp is NOT one of us, has no interest in Free Republic other than as a place to advertise.
Banned? No. Made to 'fess up, repent and act right? Hell yes.
Since we know that ain't gonna happen, then we are left with shunning and mockery.
