Poll: Majority of 18-24 Year Olds Believe Every Kid Should Get a Trophy

A new national poll has found that a majority (51%) of Americans aged 18-24 feel that everyone who participates in a sport should get a trophy.

But, "According to a Reason-Rupe poll, among all Americans, "57 percent of Americans think only the winning players should receive" receive trophies while "40 percent say all kids on a sport team should receive a trophy for their participation." As Americans get older, fewer believe that everyone should be awarded a participation trophy. The poll found that among 25-34 year olds, 43% believe everyone should get a trophy. In addition, 39% of those aged 35-54 and 29% of seniors want trophies for all." Well yeah. How else will kids learn to deal with loss/defeat. The "everybody gets a trophy" thing started a long time ago so children wouldn't "suffer" a loss of "self-esteem". Waaaaaaa! Then they enter the real world and aren't able to cope because suddenly, not everybody IS a winner. Yikes. I guess that's just the crumudgeon(sp) coming out. In order to stop this loss of "self esteem", everybody should get a 4.0.

I think it depends on the age group and the purpose of the league. In most tball leagues, the object is to teach the players the fundamentals of baseball. I was shocked when we joined a league recently because the tball division kept records and had standings. And at that point, we decided to go all in and work to win the league championship. The parents paid the team mom for end of season trophies at the beginning of the season. Those were our participation trophies. Then came the division championship. And then they had an end of season tournament. Our team won that as well. I thought it was great fun. For the adults. The children did not care at all within five minutes of the last game being over. All they cared about was their post game snack. Lol

By the time children are ten-ish, I think participation trophies are wrong. I would say end them at 8. I am not opposed to medals given out by coaches at a team party. The medal serves as a memento of being on a team and the progress that may or may not have been made during a season.

In high school, participants receive letters and bars for participation. The receive trophies or rings for winning.

There are trophies and there are trophies. A first place trophy isn’t the same as one for participation. Much ado about nothing.

Personally, I believe that another name for Second Place is First Loser. America is all about winning, not equality. Equality is the hallmark of Communism. We may all be born equal, but everything after that is competition to be first.
If you don’t get that trophy, then, at the next opportunity you will try harder.

What about those who didn't get a trophy, shouldn't THEY get a trophy also, for not getting one?

I think the trophy presenter should get a trophy for handing out trophies and all those parents who attend esp. dad who’d rather be at the local pub .... pub trophy, yea.
