Back when the idiot was still in office he visited the National Military Command Center (Pentagon Basement) on a 4th of July. My Missile Combat Crew happened to be on Alert that day and ol' Carter gave all the nuclear alert forces a speech via the Primary Alerting System. He told us how we were the backbone of deterence and how he fully supported us.
While the idiot flapped his gums my crew was underground in a Titan II ICBM Launch Control Center; it was so hot topside (Kansas) that the cooled and chilled water systems kept shutting down, mostly due to no money for needed major repairs. My crew had all changed from our uniforms to running shorts and shoes and all four of us were sitting in the command console chairs or laying on the floor because the Control Center temperature was hovering around 110 degrees and the missile fuel and oxidizer tank pressures were sitting just under having to take it off Alert (non-Launch Capable).
My whole crew laughed at and derided Carter during his speech and when we got back to base from Alert the off-going crews all hung around and talked crap about Carter, our CinC. Here we were, 18 Combat Crews in charge of launching ICBMs talking dirt on their CinC and the squadron and Wing higher ups listened in and laughed with us.
Nobody got in trouble and we all got to vent our frustrations.
