The hiatus in the rise in global temperatures could last for another 10 years, according to new research.
Scientists have struggled to explain the so-called pause that began in 1999, despite ever increasing levels of CO2 in the atmosphere.
The latest theory says that a naturally occurring 30-year cycle in the Atlantic Ocean is behind the slowdown.
The researchers says this slow-moving current could continue to divert heat into the deep seas for another decade.
However, they caution that global temperatures are likely to increase rapidly when the cycle flips to a warmer phase.

According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), global average temperatures have increased by around 0.05C per decade in the period between 1998 and 2012.
This compares with a decadal average of 0.12 between 1951 and 2012.
More than a dozen theories have been put forward on the cause of this pause in temperature growth that occurred while emissions of carbon dioxide were at record highs.

Theory = best guess that matches conditions and can explain outcome. In climatology there is, to date, no proven theory. This theory, assuming an honest effort, will be used until it no longer matches conditions. The conditions it uses, that of the deep ocean currents, have been known for years. Previous computer models did not use these known conditions. Are there other conditions and processes that are currently unaccounted for or unknown? YES!
Does it make sense to spend $Billions or $Trillions to solve a problem that you cannot adequately quantify or model? Only if you love Big Brother and want to be smothered in his bosom!

The planet is 5 billion years old. We have reliable weather records for, oh let’s be generous- 150 years. trying to tell what the weather will be like in the future with that dataset is like trying to figure out what will happen all of next month by figuring what happened just last tuesday at 6:32 Pm and 20 seconds ONLY.

A new study has a new explanation for why our models are getting it wrong: equatorial winds. Evidently, Pacific trade winds have been blowing much harder over the past 20 years than they normally do, and as a result, surface heat is being stored in our oceans.

A different theory is that the Earth's climate is a bit less sensitive to increases in greenhouse-gas emissions than scientists and models have assumed
"Global warming is continuing, it just gets manifested in different ways," says Dr. Kevin Trenberth, a scientist with the National Center for Atmospheric Research who co-authored the study with NCAR's Dr. John Fasullo.
The lower pace of warming in recent years may be explained by natural phenomena including volcanic eruptions, a periodic drop in the sun’s warmth and natural variation in the weather, the panel said in its wider report, the UN said.
