It is interesting how many Army bases are named after Confederate Generals.
Just off hand I can think of several. Fort Hood, Fort A P Hill, Fort Lee, Fort Bragg, Fort Stewart, (Is there a Fort Jackson?).

Don’t forget Fort Gordon, GA, named after Gen. John B. Gordon.

I was just wondering about that. I am supposedly descended from one of Jackson’s cousins.

I once saw a picture of General Gordon’s wife. She was strikingly beautiful. I think Gordon was shot 9 times in a battle and thanks to his wife’s care he survived.

Bragg and Polk were an interesting pair. Braxton Bragg was an incredibly profane man. Polk, an Episcopal bishop, would not permit a swear word to pass his lips.
Just before a battle, Bragg urged his men to give the Yankees hell. Polk said, "Now you boys give the Yankees just what General Bragg said."

I had always assumed that Fort Stewart was named after J.E.B. Stewart or is it Stuart?
General Early was one of those coarse, profane soldiers who cursed constantly. Due to the influence of Lee and Jackson, he ended the war a devout Christian.

Andrew. I once read that half the South claims some kinship to Andrew Jackson so don’t really know.
