Official: Amish Girls Sexually Abused in Abduction

Two young Amish sisters were sexually abused after their abduction from a roadside farm stand in northern New York, a prosecutor said Saturday.

St. Lawrence County District Attorney Mary Rain's disclosure came hours after the county's sheriff said the couple charged in the kidnapping were prowling for easy targets and may have planned to abduct other children.

Stephen Howells Jr. and Nicole Vaisey, both of Hermon, were arrested and arraigned Friday on charges they abducted the 7-year-old and 12-year-old sisters with the intent to physically or sexually abuse them.

"We felt that there was the definite potential that there was going to be other victims," St. Lawrence County Sheriff Kevin Wells said.

The sisters were abducted Wednesday from the farm stand in front of the family's home in Oswegatchie, near the Canadian border. They were set free by their captors about 24 hours later and turned up safe at the door of a house 15 miles from where they were taken.

The sheriff said Howells, 39, and Vaisey, 25, "were targeting opportunities" and did not necessarily grab the girls because they were Amish.

Sherlock Holmes once said, to see true depravity, you must go to the countryside. In the city there is a chance you will be heard by a pitying ear.

Paraphrased, but you get the idea.

Sad thing is that bad people live everywhere, and the government won’t do much to stop them. Children have to be wrapped in bubble wrap or else they will have to endure horrible things. It’s awful that kids cannot play on a playground or be unsupervised out in public without some some sickos picking them up and assaulting and/or killing them. But society’s compassion lies with those who make bad choices and commit evil deeds, and not with innocent victims who deserve justice.

Four stakes for each, some rope, fire ants, remote location...

Well, I reckon you have the idea.

I wish this info had never been released to the public. Now the girls will have to live with everyone knowing. Poor babies.

I agree with you in principle but if the criminals are being charged with sexual crimes, that makes it public knowledge. We can take comfort in the fact that the society in which they live won't blame the little girls - unlike muzzies.

Just french fries? That’s weird, too.

My 15 year old daughter sometimes eats "just French fries", especially the ones that I slice and deep fry in vegetable oil. She says mine are better than any fast food place.

It is lousy reporting, no doubt, but the 3rd paragraph also indicates that the girls were sexually abused.

I so wish I could remember the story it is from. My copy of the complete Holmes is half an hour away at the moment.

Conan Doyle was a very, very wise man.

You need a kindle! The complete Sherlock Holmes was one of the first things I put on my kindle.

I’ve probably read those stories hundreds of times, but as with all detective stories I never remember them. Which is great, because I can read them over and over.

They really are my very favorite things to read.

I think for Christmas this year I’m going to look for an annotated version, I’d love to know more about some of the little day-to-day things they reference.

My kindle - and tablet - both get swiped so often by the grand kids they seem to have become communal over my protests. They find it funny. :)

Ever tried his other stories? They are worth a serious look. Some on boxing, a fair amount on medicine, as you’d expect, some really odd speculative fiction and one truly stunning horror story that will keep you awake for days.

The horror story sounds intriguing, but I’d need to be in the right head space. I started “the white company” which I thought was brilliant but I found it exhausting to read. I understood the archaic lingo but I was doing a mini-translation all the time. I’ll probably try it again, it’s on the kindle too.

No, it doesn’t:

“Stephen Howells Jr. and Nicole Vaisey, both of Hermon, were arrested and arraigned Friday on charges they abducted the 7-year-old and 12-year-old sisters with the intent to physically or sexually abuse them.”

This only says they are charged with INTENT.

I truly love my neighbors and feel good about them BEING MY NEIGHBORS!

But how do they feel about you? Are you "English?"

I like French fries, too, especially homemade ones, but it still looks weird to me to see no other food around. This could just be me being a dinosaur.

This sort of thing happened to Elizabeth Smart. She seems to have managed through a strong family and faith to survive this type of criminal assault.

Our society does not seem to get angry enough about these types of crimes. As individuals we are mostly in agreement about the seriousness of such behavior; but when public policy is being formed, PC sets in, and all the liberal gobbledygook about rehabilitation and mercy gathers steam and rolls right over common sense. Wee need our society to be less tolerant of evil, and more willing to punish and incarcerate anti-social psychopaths.
