We had a big bible camp right down the road from an old favorite nightclub, actually a few were in the area, both nightclubs and bible camps, a great resort spot, a lake area with lots of cabins and such, Weekends were fun! Lots of mosquitoes too.

I had just gotten back from the American Legion’s Boys’ State at the Rutgers campus in New Brunswick, NJ. I was about to enter my senior year at an overrated Catholic prep school in South Jersey.

So what were you up to?

Good evening, Maestro! 16 August 1965, I was preparing to begin my Senior year of HS after an interlude in Taiwan. The change that occurred in the U.S. during my short absence was substantial.

I remember, during the return trip from Taipei to D.C. Land, sitting in a hotel in San Fransisco in late June 1965 with my family watching TV. The Byrds were singing - "Mr. Tambourine Man" IIRC. I was mesmerized by the lead singer's pink diamond shaped specs and more hair than I had ever seen on a man outside of Biblical movies.

Shortly after I got back from 'Nam, Elmo Zumwalt became CNO and began issuing "Z-Grams" - one of which authorized Naval personnel to maintain beards. I grew a splendid beard my last year in the Navy - not popular with the higher-ups.

I went out to Chicago on Liberty one week to visit one of my Brothers-in Arms - the Shore Patrol in 9th Naval District were a little sketchy on Zumwalt's directives, but I avoided any ill effects. I was sitting in a bar in Chicago and some moron asked me what Navy I was in.
