FERGUSON, Mo. (CBS St. Louis/AP) — Ferguson police released the name of the officer that fatally shot 18-year-old Michael Brown, while also revealing that Brown was a suspect in a convenience story robbery over a $48.99 box of cigars.

Ferguson Police Chief Thomas Jackson said Friday morning that Officer Darren Wilson fatally shot the unarmed African-American teen last Saturday following a convenience store robbery call. Wilson has been with the Ferguson Police Department for the past six years and previously had no disciplinary action taken against him.

Watch the video of Jackson being escorted to his vehicle following the news conference:

Wilson has been on administrative leave since the shooting.

Jackson added that Wilson was treated for injuries that occurred on Saturday.

Jackson said Wilson, along with other officers, was called to the area after a 911 call reporting a “strong-arm robbery” at a nearby convenience store.

TIMELINE: The Death of Michael Brown and Unrest in Ferguson

A police report indicates that Brown was a “primary suspect” in the robbery that took place the day he was fatally shot. According to the report, Brown got physical with the convenience story employee over a box of cigars worth $48.99 he was trying to steal.

“Brown, still holding a box Swisher Sweets in his right hand, grabs [redacted] by his shirt with his left hand. Brown aggressively pulls [redacted] in close to him and then immediately pushes him back into a display rack,” the police report states.

Jackson said that a dispatcher gave a description of the robbery suspect, and Wilson, who had been assisting on another call, was sent to investigate. Wilson encountered Brown just after 12:01 p.m., with a second officer arriving three minutes later.

Damn... Fifty bucks for Swisher Sweets? What’s the value threshold for felony theft in Missouri?

There were video snapshots from the store as well as photos of Brown laying dead in the road. Obviously the same guy if just from his build and clothing. The shoes are a dead giveaway too.

oh great. Now some on here who endorsed him being shot in the back will REALLY be glad.

I still say it wasn’t right to shoot him as he was running OR if he put up his hands (especially that)

I hope this is finally a lesson learned. The race-baiters who jump to conclusions, and that includes Obama, should just SHUT UP except for advocating calm. The police should not have military equipment mighty enough to behave as an agressor nation. And the black community should start looking at itself and figure out that it’s not okay to look the other way when thugs make their neighborhoods unliveable.

Re your pix narrative. Brown (the black poor unarmed “teenager” killed like Treyvon Martin during an attempt to seize a gun from a law officer) is this huge person grasping this tiny store clerk by the throat and tossing him against a display case as he heads out the door with stolen goods.

Sounds like Brown not only assaulted the store clerk but also Officer Wilson who had to be treated for injuries after the shooting. Not surprising as Brown felt he could walk into the store, take whatever he wanted and then assault the much smaller clerk if he had the audacity to try and stop him. He may have turned and started running after he attacked Wilson when he saw the officer had drawn his gun.

This is sounding a lot different than the narrative about jaywalking that was first given by Brown’s accomplice (Johnson I think is his name).

The clothing appears to match that of a suspect in a convenience store robbery that happened minutes before Dorian Johnson gave an eye-witness account of Michael Brown's shooting. His account could be called into question after it was revealed he is a robbery suspect

The police has it all wrong. I recall the 1960s and how something gets mislabeled as "looting" and I know the real story as revealed back then.

The young man picked up his layaway merchandise -- the item he'd been making payments on until it was fully paid for -- and started to leave the store.

That's when the evil capitalist owner informed him that the cost of the cigars had increased to $48.99 and he could not yet have the cigars -- which the young man intended to distribute at a home for poor elderly, BTW.

You see in black neighborhoods the exorbitant prices black citizens are forced to pay include what can legally be deemed layaway payments if the citizen chooses. The practice was revealed in the 1960s when racist media employees reported looting. It wasn't looting after all.

(Nothing funny about what's happening? You are right but the civil rights industry and victims industry have been stirring up hate and violence with lies and it's time for them to be held accountable. IMO.)

Dang. All that rioting fer nothin’!

Well, at least we PATRIOTS got to see a Police State in action...and we also got to witness YET ANOTHER EXAMPLE of how the MEDIA whips people up into a frenzy any old time the WANT to.

Both results are EQUALLY chilling and should be duly noted. But, they won’t be...

Dang.

Well, this changes my own perception of the shooting a bit. It raises the probability that the Teen really did make a move on the cop. That Teen is a big boy and has obviously some violent propensity. A serious problem now is that one cannot accept the word of any police chief as being true just because he says them. Whatever the situation too many will say what they thinks protects themselves and their department and the truth is irrelevant.

And remember, always capitalize Teen as you would Negro or Czech or Frenchman.
