Pope Francis has joined with Christians facing genocide in Iraq and Syria, calling upon the world to make an armed response to the Islamic State. He has asked the world to "stop these crimes" and called for the use of "a professional, well-equipped army."
You know a situation is bad when a pope calls for an armed response. Pope Francis, widely appreciated as a practical and realistic man, is not just calling for a cease-fire or negotiations. Instead, he is inviting an armed response to the terrorism of the Islamic State.
Such a call is virtually unprecedented for a pontiff in modern times, but our age is an extraordinary one and the Islamic State has no interest in a bargaining table. Instead, the Islamic State is bent on genocide and barbarism, ruthlessly exterminating anyone who opposes them.
On Sunday, Pope Francis said he held "dismay and disbelief" over what is happening in Iraq. He called the Islamic State fighters terrorists and said there was a need for "a professional, well-equipped army." "The situation is going from bad to worse," he warned.
Meanwhile, Pope Francis was not the only cleric calling for swift and decisive action to end the genocide in Iraq. The Episcopal Vicar of Iraq, Canon Andrew White, managed to visit the town of Qaraqosh under cover and personally assess the situation in that community following Islamic State capture.
His words are chilling. "Today, Qaraqosh stands 90 per cent empty, desecrated by the gunmen of the fanatical Islamic State terror group now in control. The majority of the town's 50,000 people have fled, fearing that, like other Christians in this region, they will be massacred.
"The militants, in a further act of sacrilege, have established their administrative posts in the abandoned churches."

Harb pledges to be forceful president [Maronite "ready to fight" Israel, "protect Hezbollah"]

"Beirut: Boutros Harb, long-serving Maronite Lebanese Member of Parliament, is standing for president and reaching out to the Shiite Hezbollah, across the political divide in the country.
[...]
"I have proposed that the Lebanese army and government must be in control of declaring war, and that we should find a way to incorporate Hezbollah's forces into the army. But this has to be on the condition that the Lebanese government and army accept the full duty of being ready to fight and protect Hezbollah if Israel attacks," he said, adding that it was also important that Lebanon had to liberate the occupied territory of the Sheba'a Farms from Israel."

"The ship is sinking and all of us, the Lebanese, should stick together and work together to stop the Israeli aggression," Amin Gemayel, a Maronite Christian who served as president from 1982 to 1988, told the Arabic-language TV station Al-Jazeera . . . Michel Aoun, a one-time commander in Lebanon's 15-year civil war who now serves in parliament, said . . . "I don't think that Israel has the capability to destroy Hezbollah militarily because Hezbollah is not a group of armed men," Aoun said. "Hezbollah is a major part of the Lebanese social fabric."
Great work Mrs. Don-o! Appears you have pinned and the count of three. Rastlin’ lingo ... Someone should raise your hand in victory.
But I don't think Francis himself is going to call Catholics to arms, unless very obliquely (e.g. praising defenders.)
Absolutely.
The Commandment DOES NOT SAY “Thou shalt not KILL”. It says “Thou shalt not MURDER” (which is the malicious taking of the life of an innocent!).
Those who assault and MURDER innocents may be KILLED with impunity as it is an a fully justified act of SELF DEFENSE!
Let THAT killing begin!

You know things are bad when the Pope tells people to grab your guns and start shooting.
well, you don’t see that every day
I’m glad. it’s about time.
it’s time to start playing cowboys and muslims
Thank you for the clarification!
Lighten up Francis.
A “just war.” None dare call it Crusade.
(AGI) - Berlin, Aug. 26 - After having a protagonist role for peace in Lebanon Italy asks to take part in the 5+ 1 group that negotiates with Iran on nuclear. Foreign minister, Massimo D'Alema in an interview to "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung" asks a place near to the five permanent members of the UN Security Council. "We are Iran's most important commercial partners with Germany and we are pledged in Lebanon with Hezbollah. So we have the right to be included in the negotiation with Iran. The goal is not a new conflict but talks aimed at preventing Iran from having an atomic bomb, he said. Italy searched for a greater G8 involvement in the negotiation with Iran but it remained excluded from the 5 plus 1, the group that started a negotiation with Tehran offering incentives in exchange for the suspension of the uranium enrichment program. This exclusion was due to the fact that Rome was not part of the European trio (France, Germany and UK) that had tried the first mediation with Tehran and represented the EU in the 5 plus 1. D'Alema remembered that the United Nations and the EU had not a role in the Iraqi crisis, and warned that the new opportunity in Lebanon could not be missed now. "It is a very difficult mission full of unknown points but it is worth pledging or the only alternative would be a new burst of war" he said. The foreign minister, was sceptical on the possibility of a new UN resolution for the mission in Lebanon asked by the US. "I'm sceptical about it, because in these situations they always open long negotiations. The strategic plan is clear and the resolution was completed defining the rules of engagement. If they will make a new resolution soon I agree with them but the most important thing is getting there as soon as possible (In Lebanon)" he said.
I don’t know. No. It just seems like another off0Catechism, off kilter comment.
It has always been bad.
Jimmy Carter got involved with these people.
Before that, the oil industry started messing around in there.
Now they are loaded.
I mean these people have a lot of money.
From oil. Nothing else. They have no industry, no roundness of culture. THey desert dwell with huge cars, and go out into the desert on Friday night and sit in the dirt and eat with their hands in order to feel at home.
and now they have been given a green light, the Jihadists, have been ignored.
“Oh, OH, Oh, that’s just a few of them, the rest of them, the moderates they dont’ pay any attention, they don’t speak out, but they are not with them”
“They are a religion of Piece”
“the majority of them are not violent, just a few”
Ok. Nice, well what if everyone is wrong? What if the Koran says they are supposed to do this? Dows anyone read it?
And if it’s true, how many of them are not like this?
Is it just in check because the West wants it in check, and now with a muslim sympathizer in charge of the US, it’s not in check?
And NOW it’s really bad?
The World Trade center went down in 2001. But it’s bad NOW?
OUr politicians have been doing deals with these guys fro as far back as anyone cares to know, and now they’re allowed to do what they want and NOW it’s bad.
No one saw this coming? THe high schoolers around here saw this coming.
The Euros hate the US for keeping peace with strength and the Obama supporters, the majority in this country, want no war in the Mideast, so now what happens?
Europe freaks out and the Obama supporters couldn’t care any more about Iraq than they do about anything except their next government handout they voted for.
Welfare recipients and promiscuous women are in charge of the US and NOW it’s bad? NOW the Vatican looks at this?
Well, no one asks me, but I knew when we got back from Saudi Arabia, in 1991, walking through Kennedy Airport, getting thanked by some local well dressed businessman that the only first step was to get away from foreign dependence on oil and to certainly contribute to cutting back on financing these people.
Clinton proceeded to increase our ME oil dependence by like 40%, some tremendous amount. They own our politicians who get voted in by welfare and food stamp recipients and single women with kids.
And NOW it’s bad?
No one could see this coming?
Or no one wants to see this coming?
No, it just seems that this pope, God bless him, I pray for him every day in my morning offering, is just off on this too.
“Deus Vult”
and then there’s this piece Mrs. Don-O provides, wherein the Pope as usual is mis/ or disquoted.
I’d given up researching as he started criticizing our economic policies in his official letters.
But it seems I read in the original piece that the National Catholic Register, THE reliable paper, quoted him.
I’ll have to check
Prayer for Iraq
O God, who art the unsearchable abyss of peace,
the ineffable sea of love, the fountain of blessings
and the bestower of affection,
who sendest peace to those that receive it;
Open to us this day the sea of thy love
and water us with plenteous streams
from the riches of thy grace
and from the most sweet springs of thy kindness.
Make us children of quietness and heirs of peace,
enkindle in us the fire of thy love;
sow in us thy fear;
strengthen our weakness by thy power;
bind us closely to thee and to each other
in our firm and indissoluble bond of unity:
Syrian Clementine Liturgy (in: For all God’s people; p. 73)
The full text of Patriarch Sako’s prayer for peace follows:
Lord,
The plight of our country
is deep and the suffering of Christians
is severe and frightening.
Therefore, we ask you Lord
to spare our lives, and to grant us patience,
and courage to continue our witness of Christian values
with trust and hope.
Lord, peace is the foundation of life;
Grant us the peace and stability that will enable us
to live with each other without fear and anxiety,
and with dignity and joy.
Glory be to you forever. Amen.
Litany for Iraq
For lasting peace in this ancient land – From you, O Lord.
For wisdom and compassion for all in authority – From you, O Lord.
For comfort for families separated or bereaved – From you, O Lord.
For the release of captives – From you, O Lord.
For safety and security for minority communities.
For refreshment for the weary and healing for the sick – From you, O Lord.
For continuing faithfulness of the ancient churches of this land – From you, O Lord.
For tenacity of spirit for small Christian groups – From you, O Lord.
For the mutual enrichment and support of those of different Christian traditions – From you, O Lord.
You, Lord of all, we confess;
You, Lord Jesus, we glorify;
For you are the life of our bodies
And you are the Saviour of our souls.
The response in the litany and this hymn both come from the Chaldean liturgy. The ancient hymn celebrates Christ the source of resurrection in all situations of death and deprivation. (in: With All God’s People, p. 21, 22)
From Anonymous:
Father God, Our Savior and King,
We come to You in despair over the evil being done to our Middle East Christian brothers and sisters. We ask that You would put Your hand of protection upon them and that You would sustain them as You did the Israelites in the desert. Lord, cause our brothers and sisters to cry out to You for help and show them the peace that only You can give in answer to their needs. In their darkest moments, Lord, keep them, strengthen them, and comfort them. When they despair that no one is coming to help them, Lord, reveal Your glory and restore their souls.
We ask you these things in the blessed name of Your precious son, Jesus Christ.
Amen.
Everything you said about the Albigensian Crusade is either flat-out wrong or deliberately misrepresented to hide the horror of what the Catholic Church did and demonize the Cathars. No, I’m not going to go into detail here. But I do encourage readers to do their own research on the subject. And I do think it is worth noting that to this day, Catholics are so appalled that Cathars believed that ritual suicide by starvation was acceptable for a limited group of their even more limited “priest class” under extremely limited conditions, that they believe this fully justifies the Catholic slaughter of every man, woman and child in an obsessive extermination program that lasted forty years and which research suggests may have comprised TWO MILLION dead, and which history confirms accomplished the entire extermination of their culture and burning of all their religious books and beliefs. But hey, some old Cathar priests starved themselves, so hey, everyone had to die. After all, murdering the entire society in the name of the love of Christ was the only decent thing to do.
A falsehood, and easily proved to be so.
