Today, "with the goal of protecting Russia's national interests," Vladimir Putin issued a decree "banning or limiting" the import of food stuffs from countries that imposed sanctions on Russia after pro-Russian separatists shot down Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 in Ukraine. That includes the United States, the European Union, Japan, Australia, and Canada.
Russia, despite once being the bread basket of Europe, now imports 40 percent of its food. And even if local growers and producers step up to fill the gap left by the ban, it will still take a long time and the transition will be rough.

Well the Ukrainians won’t need to eat for a while. They have experience with it.
I'm going to go out on a limb and predict Comrade Putin and his cronies will still get access to and eat whatever foods they want. Everyone else - not so much.
I sure hope those collective farms are doing better than they used to, or the Russians may be looking at North Korea with envy.
More accurate to say the western parts of the former Russian Empire including Ukraine, Poland, and Beylorussia were the bread baskets of Europe.
Already having an effect.
Poland is looking at big losses. since Russia is the biggest ag buyer. Apple farmers are already protesting the Aug 1 cut of Apple exports (which represent 0.6% of Poland’s entire GDP), and are demanding the European Union reimburse the loss.

Today’s sanctions will hit even more.
On the bright side, Apples will be really cheap in Europe this fall.
Here’s another one:
Finnish dairy industry could lose 400 million euros if Russia imposes sanctions

And this is just one industry.
As I noted last night, Putin’s response seems to be designed to hurt the small Euro Nations the most. they are the easiest to peel away from supporting the sanctions against Russia, because it doesn’t take much to do real harm to their economies, which are already fragile.
Smart tactic if it cripples some smaller countries. I predict the sanctions end before Christmas. At least from the EU
Just wait until it gets cold the Euro Weenies will start warming up to Russia.
Russia is a netto-exporter of wheat since about 2007. Just think about it. They are one of the major exporters right now and just 30 years ago they had to buy all the wheat available on the world market just to keep their people from starving. Imagine a period of bad weather between 1914 and late 1990s which has suddenly finished. The reason for that bad weather is so obvious, it is started with ‘c’ and finishes with ‘ism’, yet progressives around the world are still thinks it needs another chance.
Already having an effect. Poland is looking at big losses. since Russia is the biggest ag buyer.

Who blinks, cries uncle, gives in first? The Russian people have no choice in the matter & Putin won’t be the first to give in. It’s diabolical, but that’s what happens when you have somebody like Putin ‘in control’ of his country in all the ways that matter and who has no problem playing ‘hard ball’ with the likes of President Mom Jeans.

Stupid tactic. Russia is the “small country” here. They will lose any economic war. The Russian economy is the size of Italy with about 50% of their income from oil and gas. Cutting economic ties just gives the EU less reason to oppose sanctions. Putin has painted himself into a corner and is out of options.
So then the people of Russia will starve as the price of food in exporting countries will go down.
Meat prices in America will fall.
Thank You, Vlad, for another benefit of sanctions.
