Before the polls closed in Kansas yesterday, I predicted that the Republican primary for the US Senate race would be closer than people expected. The incumbent, Sen. Pat Roberts, hadn’t spent much time at home of late — and may not even own a home there at all any more — and losing touch with constituents was what doomed Eric Cantor. Roberts won, but only by single digits against his Tea Party challenger:
Veteran Republican Senator Pat Roberts fought off a Kansas primary challenge by a Tea Party-backed doctor who had promised a “family feud” with his distant relative President Barack Obama if elected, results on Wednesday showed.
Roberts secured 48 percent of the vote and Milton Wolf 41 percent in the four-candidate field, according to final but unofficial results, the Kansas secretary of state said.
Roberts has had a 47-year career in Congress and faced conservative challenger Wolf, who said he wanted to “save the Republic.”
Wolf acknowledged a distant family tie to Obama but built his campaign on promises to repeal many of the Democratic president’s policies. In an interview with CNN, Wolf promised “the mother of all family feuds to save America,” if elected.
Roberts didn’t even get to 50% in a state he’s represented for decades, against a novice candidate. He’ll win re-election easily in November, though; more than four times as many voters turned out in the GOP primary than in the Democrats’ competitive Senate primary. Democrats have a huge enthusiasm problem, and not just in Kansas, either.

Roberts isn’t bad. I don’t think I’ve ever disagreed with his votes. He has just been in DC too long. If that is the only problem, I can live with it.
and hopefully he’s gotten a good scare thrown into him
Four candidate field? Who were the other two? Were they spoilers to siphon off conservative votes?
I guess Kansas does not have a 50% rule?
It is tough to knock off an incumbent, but I think the tea party bench is getting deeper.
I thought his conservative voting record was in the 50s.
I’d rather that the scare got jammed up the rear receptacles of the OTHER repubbie senators in Washington ...
Wrong!
Roberts is one of the top 10 most conservative members of the Senate.
Using Freedom Works, we find that his rating for 2014 is 89%, pretty good. But, his lifetime average is 79%, not quite hall of fame numbers. Lets look at his years in the league since 2005:
05 - 79%
06 - 67%
07 - 50%
08 - 57%
09 - 77%
10 - 91%
11 - 65%
12 - 54%
13 - 91%
14 - 89%
Thats one of the reason that I wasnt buying what he was selling. More important, from my standpoint is his record as an absentee Senator who doesnt live here and believes that taking care of the Agri Business and Aviation industry lobby equals taking care of constituents. Hes a second generation professional politician and that sort need to be viewed with considerable suspicion.
Now that hes squeaked by with a resounding vote of confidence from 48% of Republican voters, he will no doubt roll on to reelection without much trouble. The question is what can we expect from Roberts in his next term. I predict that Kansas will see him less and that his conservative voting record will dip into the 50% range.
WTH good are primaries for if the incumbents always seem to win. Conclusion—most voters are idiots and at best uninformed.
All that matters at the end of the game is the score.
Maybe some of us already knew Wolf wasn't what he claimed to be to outsiders from other states; maybe some of us thought his claiming to be a "hero" in his own ads was pretty egomaniacal.
Maybe some of us just like picking out our own candidates and don't much care for "leaders" of some TEA Party groups shoving one down our throats!
Don't count your chickens. In the first place, the Democrat primary wasn't all that competative. Kansas has closed primaries and the number of registered Democrats who turn out for primaries isn't that great. Second, people who voted for Wolf really, really, really don't like Roberts. There is no reason to believe that all of them will get in line and vote in November. Third, it's a three way race with a registered independent, Greg Orman. He could siphon off a lot of the independents disgusted with both parties and the Johnson County RINOs who don't care for Roberts hard right turn.
I was for Roberts in this particular election. Wolf needs to run for some position in 2016, establish a track record on political positions, then run for the Senate seat in 2020. I do think you are going to see a very conservative Jerry Moran for the next 2 years.
Roberts secures a minority of Republican votes.
Roberts LOSES a majority of Republican votes.
What a disgrace. GOPe.
Hard to tell. Alvin Zahnter was a libertarian running as a Republican. And DJ Smith? Nobody knew what the hell she was running for. But between then they took 12% of the vote that could conceivably gone to Wolf.
Were they plants? Probably not. Roberts got into this figuring he'd win by 50 points. I don't see his campaign seen the need for plants to take votes away from Wolf. No it was just to people who decided to run.
The “tea party” candidate, Wolf appears to be anti-gun — he posted some x-rays of gunshot wounds on this facebook page with “humorous” commentary. This is fact.
Just because someone declares themselves “tea party” candidate, doesn’t mean they are “real” conservatives.
“Roberts defeated Wolf, 48 percent to 41 percent;”
This is NOT a “narrow” win.

After comments like it is no wonder John Beohner, Mitch McConnell and Lindsay Graham won re-election. Voters can’t quit come to terms to vote out incumbents. make excuses without having any proof. TYpicla routine I have seen done with voters in other states and now it comes to Kansas. Thanks Kansas. Still I hope this causes Roberts to not waver back to being squimish.
