The battle for America's poorest consumers intensified Monday with Dollar Tree Inc. agreement to buy rival Family Dollar Stores Inc. for about $8.5 billion.
The chains thrived during the recession as the number of working Americans living in poverty increased by nearly 40%, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The stores appealed to cash-strapped shoppers with bargain-basement prices and locations that were closer to their homes than many Wal-Mart supercenters. The smaller package sizes of everyday items like laundry detergent and cereal fit into the budgets of consumers living paycheck to paycheck.

Same here. On some stuff their prices just can’t be beat. I came out of the 99c store one day and there were 4 older people standing by my new Jag. They said....we just wondered who was driving this beautiful car at the dollar store. I said...yeah I shop here, that’s why I can afford it. They laughed.
Oh, dear.
If any FReepers see boxes of Larry the Cable Guy’s Beer Bread Mix at a dollar store, get some. I just made my first loaf yesterday and it was a big hit. Gonna get multiple more boxes on my next visit there. All you need is the bread mix, one room-temperature beer and 3 Tbsp of butter and you’re good to go. I bought it as a joke and was pleasantly surprised.

Maybe you should have paid with phony money.
Good place to buy holiday items and plastic flowers for the graves.
This article repeats some of the dumbest shibboleths around. The reality is that five-and-dimes always had an audience. When Woolworth’s closed its stores, a cavernous niche was created. Drugstores like Walgreens and CVS filled some of the gap, but their prices have shot up into the stratosphere, making visits there like getting a loan from the local legbreaker. Dollar stores are reinventing the five-and-dime. In an era of high gas prices, there is no reason to drive out to the Walmart or pay the local chain drugstores’ extortionate prices when a dollar store is round the corner.
Well let me tell ya about Velveeta, it’s been around since 1918.
bttt
Obama has made so many poorer shoppers they are a huge market now
wait until many of us cannot afford the dollar stores
The Dollar Store has a lot of cool stuff. A lot of rich people shop there. That is why they are rich.
....”poorest consumers...” I’m not sure that is entirely accurate”......
I agree....it’s not. The middle class shop our stores here all the time. Folks at work were thrilled when they came here.
...” maybe thats why I do”.....
Exactly.....those who are thrifty earn their wealth. They know how to save on the money they’ve earned.
You need to also check those in MS groceries.....you’d be surprised.
....”And Carlyle (probably the most well connected Wash DC private equity bunch) is buying trailer parks”.....
Interesting.
I have one three blocks away.... use it anytime I need to pick up staples after work....you’re in and out in minutes. I only shop large groceries every six weeks or so....I hate shopping!
There’s both here in this small city......appeals to everyone from what I can tell.
Ahhh...Velvetta Cheese! It’s a comfort food always reminding me of my childhood days.
I’m a big cheese lover....my favorite ‘sliced’ cheese is “Cooper Sharp” (white). Though hard to find here.
