Drugstores like Walgreens and CVS filled some of the gap, but their prices have shot up into the stratosphere, making visits there like getting a loan from the local legbreaker. Dollar stores are reinventing the five-and-dime. In an era of high gas prices, there is no reason to drive out to the Walmart or pay the local chain drugstores’ extortionate prices when a dollar store is round the corner.
