(LONG BEACH, CA.) -- They came to the wrong house to do a B & E (break and enter) that night and they most certainly frightened and roughed up the wrong 80-year old man.
For one of the invader-robbers that night, a woman, it was indeed a fatal error in the victim selection process.
Tom Greer, an 80-year-old retiree arrived at his home in Long Beach Tuesday night to find a man and a woman in the middle of a late night break in, ransacking the place.
Greer told L.A.'s KNBC-TV as soon as he got inside both robbers tackled him, "Both of them jumped up on top of me," after they threw him to the ground he said.
The next day he had to be treated at a hospital for a severe shoulder and collarbone injury.
But during the attack on Greer the robbers didn't know that somehow he had gotten a hold of his .22 caliber revolver.
A .22 is a terribly puny, underpowered cartridge for self-defense, most firearms instructors would say, but in a pinch it's better than throwing a rock.
Greer told the station, "I come back and they see me with a gun, and they run," he said.
The man got away, but as they were both running in an alley behind the house. Greer fired his weapon at them and the woman fell after being hit by a bullet.
Greer said the woman pleaded, 'Don't shoot me, I'm pregnant! I'm going to have a baby!' And I shot her anyway," he said.
Greer said after he fired the shots, "She was dead. I shot her twice, she best be dead ... (The man) had run off and left her."

And likely the same outcome. He'll die in prison.
In all honesty, I am glad he shot them.
But they were out of the house and no longer posing a threat. He is going to jail...or at least to trial.
Doesn’t matter how it is written or who writes it, this was a very bad shooting and in utterly no way was self defense.
It's a tiny bullet, but there can be thirty of them - nonstop until the magazine is empty. Dead - Right - There.
Shouldn't have said that. Could be his undoing.
Is it just me or does it sounds like this wasn’t self-defense and that the guy pursued these people off his property and more or less executed one of them?
Don’t get me wrong. I have zero sympathy for the dead perp. But it seems as though this incident went waaay beyond self-defense.
Opinions anyone?
Just because some punk got scared and stopped pounding you in the face doesn’t mean you can’t hit him back.
So she was running away, shot in the back and fell in the alley. Then he walks up to her and as she pleads for her life he shoots her twice??!! He’ll be in prison for the rest of his sorry life.
This is why you cannot buy .22 ammo anymore...
And for sure now after this story.
They will exploit this idiot’s poor judgment against all of us.
Autopsies will have to confirm entry points AND pregnancy, if any. Also, presence of weapons on the non-breathing participants.
Violent home invaders are basically terrorists. They deserve nothing less than death. If I were on the jury, I’d acquit the old guy in a split-second. He performed a public service. Just a shame he couldn’t have polished off the other (male) thug as well.
If it happened as written its hardly self defense. I think he will do time.
He might get away with this in Texas but not in CA.
Yep. She was a thief, but he is a murderer.
Nope. I usually love A Happy Ending, where the Bad Guys lose, but I don’t condone this at all.
Gramps is going to be doing some time, though I’m sure by now, living where he lives, he’s taken more crap than humanly tolerable.
“I was in fear for my life”
Read it...Know it....Live it!
Read the article. He shot her when she was running away, wounding her. Unless I see a report that she had a gun or some other weapon, killing her at that point was not self-defense.
I would acquit also.
“As she was running, she turned towards me in a threatening manner, and not knowing whether she had a weapon or not, and after having assaulted me IN my home, I feared for my life and I regrettably had to shoot her.”
Best be not.
The plea about pregnancy was probably a lie, but you have to be pretty cold to shoot anyway, in the circumstances as related.
No sympathy here for any of them.
