Israel’s Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz said on Tuesday that the just announced cancellation of European and U.S. flights to Israel handed a victory to terrorism.
“There is no reason for the American companies to stop their flight and give a prize to terror,” Katz said, according to Jerusalem Post correspondent Niv Elis.
On Tuesday, four major U.S. airline carriers announced their decision to cancel flights heading to Israel indefinitely, one specifically citing the danger of Gaza rocket attacks near Israel’s Ben Gurion airport.
Shortly after the airlines announced their decision, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said it told all U.S. airlines that flights to the airport are prohibited for 24 hours, according to The Associated Press. German carrier Lufthansa nixed all flights to and from Tel Aviv for the next two days, according to an ABC News correspondent, and Air France also suspended its flights to Israel.

Exactly..I can understand some who think this is a shunning of Israel, I don’t see it that way..they are protecting themselves and their passengers. I wouldn’t want to go to Israel right now, its dangerous..they are being bombarded with rocket fire constantly..its just not safe
Not surface to air, rather surface to surface. The risk wasn’t taking down an airliner, rather hitting one on the runway, or hitting a terminal. Or a restaurant or hotel once people got off. That risk will exist till Hamas’ capability is destroyed, something the US opposed, and until Hizbollah’s capacity is destroyed.
It also gives the terrorist an idea.......
I think if a rocket had not hit one mile from the airport today, the reaction from the airlines might have been different, since thus far there had not been a travel warning or a cancellation of flights..but I think the one rocket getting through(Since Iron Dome can’t prevent every single rocket from getting through) it freaked the airlines out

It's not a "prize to terror," though, because a rocket actually did make it through the Iron Dome and got to the airport (although it landed outside). You can't blame passengers and the airlines for being a little nervous about this, especially after the Malaysian Airlines shoot-down. The latter was probably accidental, btw, but Hamas has said that one of their goals was to shoot down a passenger jet coming into Tel Aviv.
The best thing to do would really be to wipe out the whole nest.
Check your favorite travel site. If you’re in the mood to fly to Kiev, Ukraine, this weekend, plenty of flights. From the US. On lines that aren’t currently flying to Israel. If the Ukraine doesn’t freak airlines out, actually they’re pretty well protected on international flights, particularly in war zones, or freak out the FAA, the cancelation of flights to Israel is bizarre. This was a political move, nothing more. Worse yet, really small time Chicago move. Maybe something an alderman on the take might do, Mayor Daley would have more sense. There are many ways to apply pressure, a stupid public move like this is, well, rank amateur.
War is not a humanitarian relief activity
Israel keeps the Palestinian civilians separate from the Hamas terrorist organization and doesn’t mix up the two. In fact, the IDF puts out videos on their site that shows how they avoid hitting Palestinian civilians and collateral damage it the maximum extent possible.
Israel declares to the whole world that they do not target Palestinian civilians, contrary to the false propaganda that the terrorists disseminate.
Those are just the facts of the matter as far as Israel handles it’s own affairs.
Everyone is uneasy because of the destruction of the Malaysian Airlines jet - and the disappearance of another. If anything did happen on the Meditteranean coast, people would say that they should not have been flying there.

IDIOTIC MOVE...but yes, they’re free to do that. If there were a REAL THREAT, Israel would shut down their operations. A rocket landing a few miles away is not going to take out a plane on final, and if Hamas had manpads in striking range of a major airport, they would not be waiting until now to use them.
But the good side - those IDIOT AIRLINES are going to learn a VERY TOUGH LESSON from this stunt - they will find people (like myself) will no even consider booking them to fly to Israel, even though I have enough points to fly my wife and myself for free (or close enough to free). I simply won’t trust them to be there for me.
So El Al, and by extension, ISRAEL, will be the BIG WINNER from this stunt in the long term. Don’t be surprised if El Al starts flying some of those same planes.

You’re the second person here to figure that out (after me). So why don’t we call for ALL AMERICANS to leave Israel, if it is that dangerous to be there - there are much higher value targets for the terrorists, such as government buildings, shopping malls, etc. Trying to nail a parked aircraft at just the right time (i.e., when it is boarded, but still in the terminal) from a shot 50 miles away sounds like a waste of effort.

They’ve as good a chance as hitting a hospital or school, which they try every day. And yes, a shopping center would be a better target. If they could target. Hopfully not an issue in a few weeks.
That is not the way it works. Why are you trying to let Obama’s opposition to Israel off the hook? It is political. Obama is trying to punish Israel.
If you produce a news report documenting that for this FAA 24-hour bam for US airlines, I’ll post it.
