Tim Draper loves California so much he’d like to see six of them.
The Silicon Valley venture capitalist, best known for backing such companies as Hotmail and Skype in the early days of the internet boom, believes government in his home state is so broken down that the only way to fix it is to break it up – like taking an axe to a creaking corporation with too many unprofitable divisions and too much bureaucracy choking its potential.
And so he dreams of Silicon Valley, his home turf, getting the chance to run itself; Los Angeles becoming its own smog-choked fiefdom that can create whatever tax incentives it wants to stop film and television production leaving town; San Diego and the long desert border dealing with the immigration crisis by itself; and the sparsely populated areas in the east and north of the state getting some autonomy – not to mention the right to send two senators each to Washington.
It’s the sort of idea one might hear floated over a dinner table or in a spirited debate in a bar. Since Draper is a billionaire, though, he has paid professional signature-gatherers to muster popular support for his dream of splitting California into six and seems likely to get his proposal on the ballot in 2016. He claims to have gathered a staggering 1.3 million signatures – more than 7% of California’s vote-eligible population – of which he formally delivered just a small initial consignment earlier this week.
The reaction, at least so far, has run from bemused to outraged. Nobody – except perhaps Draper himself – thinks the measure stands the slightest chance of passing. (California voters are a lot more indulgent about putting measures on the ballot than they are about approving them.) But that hasn’t stopped

Which senators are from DC?
Leave California’s Senators be. What you do is give each district in each California state a vote. Most votes win the positions.
That would likely be the case... Since Dems would lose the current huge Electoral Vote advantage, they might push for a Popular Vote amendment or require the ‘Californitas’ to give the EV’s to the national PV winner.

Why? Because instead of 2 senators from California, there would be 12 senators from what is now California..

True... if you look at CT.. the urban area is blue...most of the state is red....The town I lived in before I moved was blue...but the towns east was a swing town as is the north town and the south town was red.
Just wondering — could Texas be “split up” for the purposes of more Senators, yet kept together for state government purposes (e.g. The Commonwealth of Texas)? Would that satisfy anyone?
The whole problem is: the northern, rural parts of California don’t get represented in The Senate. I suspect
these areas would vote Republican.
We are 5th generation So. Californians and draper can take his 6 states and shove them up his backide!
Congress would never allow it anyway, it would give California 8 more Senators.

They are not divided exactly how I would like them. Mendicino, Humbolt and Lake absolutely should not be in “Jefferson”, the spoil it and make it competitive, they belong with the Bay Area.

As I’ve posted before, I think that California should be split into 5 states, not 6 (the “state names” provided are descriptive, but hardly optimal):
1. State of Los Angeles, with all of L.A. County:
10.0 million pop in 2010, 45%-50% Hispanic, 10% black, 12%-15% Asian
16 electoral votes, 29.17% McCain 2008, 35.60% Bush 2004, 32.35% Bush 2000
(I would encourage GOP-leaning L.A. County suburbs to split and form their own county and be able to join the Inland Empire centered state.)
2. State of San Francisco Bay, with all of Alameda, Contra Costa, Humboldt, Marin, Mendocino, Monterey, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Solano, Sonoma and Yolo Counties:
8.1 million pop in 2010, 21%-25% Hispanic, 7% black, 17%-20% Asian
13 electoral votes, 24.82% McCain in 2008, 29.95% Bush in 2004, 30.64% Bush in 2000
3. State of Inland Empire, with all of Kern, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties:
6.7 million pop in 2010, 36%-40% Hispanic, 6% black, 4%-5% Asian
11 electoral votes, 46.79% McCain in 2008, 55.54% Bush in 2004, 50.70% Bush in 2000
4. State of Central Valley, with all of Alpine, Amador, Butte, Calaveras, Colusa, Del Norte, El Dorado, Fresno, Glenn, Inyo, Kings, Lake, Lassen, Madera, Mariposa, Merced, Modoc, Mono, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, Sacramento, San Benito, San Joaquin, Shasta, Sierra, Siskiyou, Stanislaus, Sutter, Tehama, Trinity, Tulare, Tuolumne and Yuba Counties:
6.5 million pop in 2010, 27%-32% Hispanic, 5% black, 7%-8% Asian
11 electoral votes, 48.27% McCain in 2008, 56.92% Bush in 2004, 53.17% Bush in 2000
5. State of San Diego, with all of Imperial, Orange and San Diego Counties:
6.3 million pop in 2010, 30%-35% Hispanic, 4% black, 11%-13% Asian
11 electoral votes, 47.07% McCain in 2008, 55.86% Bush in 2004, 52.57% Bush in 2000
Essentially, comfortably Democrat California would be converted into two ridiculously Democrat states (based in L.A. and San Francisco Bay) and three GOP-leaning states, and under normal circumstances the 5 states would give the GOP a 6-4 edge in U.S. Senate seats (the Dems have had a 2-0 edge since 1992) and a 33-29 edge in electoral votes (the Dems got all 55 EVs from CA in 2008 and 2004 and all 54 EVs from CA in 2000, 1996 and 1992).
We should also split Texas up into four GOP states of around 11 electoral votes each, which would give us 6 new GOP Senators (and increase GOP electoral votes by 6 as well).
I could think of some colorful names.
It really perturbs me that people are actually discussing and pushing for this now, and their plan of division sucks.
