This law also created a "Dangerous Wild Animals" Board comprised of a member from DNR, DHHS, and Agriculture. The Board is tasked with deciding which animals to include on the DWA list.
The list is out and it's not pretty. As it stands today it includes:
- All turtles and tortoises,
- Many fish, including all catfish species and even aquarium fish like neon tetras,
- Most rodents, including many rat, mouse, hamster, gerbil, rabbit/hare, and guinea pig species, - Many birds,
- Amphibians such as frogs and toads,
- Hedgehogs,
- Sugar Gliders,
- Ferrets,
- Constrictor snakes,
and a host of other species that are commonly kept as pets, all of which are at the link I posted.
If you are on Facebook there are sample letters and the common names for the species on the list available on the group "WV_Reptile Watch", as most people don't know the scientific names for their pets.
The public comment period ends 7/31. PLEASE send in your comments.
There are already so many federal laws that the average person commits three federal felonies a day.

Did you really think we want those laws observed?" said Dr. Ferris. "We want them to be broken. You'd better get it straight that it's not a bunch of boy scouts you're up against... We're after power and we mean it... There's no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens? What's there in that for anyone? But just pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced or objectively interpreted and you create a nation of law-breakers and then you cash in on guilt. Now that's the system, Mr. Reardon, that's the game, and once you understand it, you'll be much easier to deal with. ― Ayn Rand, Atlas Shrugged

What the government doesn’t seem to get is that the more laws you make, the more criminals you create - Arlo Guthrie
Oh, they get it alright.
“Dangerous” Wild Animals.......
Sugar Gliders and turtles...
BWAHAAHAAHAAHAA.....
Comes right out of “South Park”
“That rabbit was coming right for me!!!!!”
So a gold fish or a hamster is now a public safety hazard. Glad they have that Meth problem all taken care of.
Nice work WVA.
I would send a nice FU letter with no return address.
Anyone sending in questions will surely be visited by the MRAP goon squad
Silly Arlo. They get it.

And that the only thing it's meant to do, the law will be almost universally ignored, as the current wildlife laws are, I know people locally that have pet raccoons and possums and they have been illegal for ages, but West Virginia is a very rural state and they know their chances of ever getting caught or prosecuted are to the south side of slim and none. It will be the same with this law, even more so, but it gives the state another tool to go after citizens that they want to target, now they fine you because your kid unknowingly happens to have a rare breed of guinea pig or a neon tetra in the fish tank....
Sugar Gliders and turtles...
BWAHAAHAAHAAHAA.....
I know I often wake in a cold sweat worrying about wild guinea pigs breaking out of their cages and running rampant.....
“They’ve got bloody great fangs!”
*ROFL*
Actually goldfish managed to avoid the list; I’ve no idea how the DWA Board overlooked them.
What are you all worried about? Clearly, this is for the safety of all West Virginia residents.
That’s why they included:
All species of turtles
Chinese Mystery Snails
New Zealand Mud Snails
Zebra Mussels
Gobies
Hedgehogs
Whales
Dolphins
Manatees
Salamanders
I can’t imagine what would happen if a rabid zebra mussel went berserk and started terrorizing the countryside.
I remember when a blue whale got loose in Sutton Lake once. It sank three houseboats before they could get it tied up.
It was from a bootleg concert a good while back. Arlo may actually have attributed the sentiment to Woody, been a while since I give it a listen.
They might not terrorize, but they sure cause havoc when put in the wrong place. We have major problems in North Texas lakes because of them.
Primates: All non-human primates prohibited
I could have so much fun with that
but I’m concerned that all camelidea species are being classed as “dangerous animals.” $100 a head for each alpaca or llama is half the value of the animal, is it annual? And to cage a pushme-pullyou? criminal!
I believe it is the species ‘TerribleCommieMarxistus’ native to college campi.
