According to local reports, pro-Russia rebels were the first to arrive and have taken control of the crash site. The deputy prime minister of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR), Andrei Purgin told Russian news agency Interfax that militants were on the site and planning on handing over the recordings of the plane to Moscow. "Of course, we most likely will give them to the Interstate Aviation Committee (IAC), to Moscow. If I heard Stuart Varney right, the plane went down around 4:10pm Central European Time. I think that translates to around 8:10 am CST US.

Simple, tracking of Flight MH17 was not and could not be lost over the Western Ukraine. Remember, there are multiple systems tracking the movements of Flight MH17, including the telemetry of engine performance.
